Things to do in Guangzhou
Guangzhou is among the top places you have to visit on a trip to China. This massive metropolis lies in the southern areas of China and has a mixture of modern and old parts. The city is, and always has been, one of the most important places for trade and industry holding a lot of old and new attractions. It has become a very modern city while retaining its old heritage.
In her old times when Guangzhou was still known as Canton, the city used to be on the silk road, thus making it one of the important export cities of China. This feature of the city can still be seen today. Although we do not bring it on our list of top things to do, visiting the Canton Fair is also among the top activities of this city. Just like the Canton Fair, there are many other fun activities for travelers to Guangzhou, ten of which are listed below:
Have Some Fun at Chimelong Resort
Chimelong Resort is a very large complex with several theme parks for having some fun. Besides the fun activities you can do inside this complex, there are also great hotels and aquariums nearby, making this place the number one activity to try during summer vacation. There are five areas in this family-friendly resort, which are:
- Chimelong Paradise: It is a very large amusement park with so many fun games, world-class rides, and facilities that can be compared to Disneyland.
- Chimelong Waterpark: The perfect spot in the resort for getting away from the hot sun of summer. There are again some world-class rides as well as many pools and water slides in this area.
- Chimelong Safari Park: Ride around in this park to see the animals and even visit the famous Pandas of China.
- Chimelong Birds Park: If you like birds, then you will love this part of the complex as you can see some very rare Chinese birds in this place.
- Chimelong Circus: If you are looking for a great show with your family, do not miss this circus while at the Resort.
Ascend Canton Tower
Ever since it was built, the Canton Tower became a very famous landmark of the Modern Guangzhou. Since it is the tallest structure of the city, it is the best spot to have a bird’s-eye view of Guangzhou. The tower is almost 600 meters tall with a glass floor observatory at the height of 450 meters. The best time to visit is at night when you can see the city lights below you as you walk around the glass floor.
However, the view is one of the best parts, but it is not just that. There are also restaurants and coffee shops where you can sit and have something while you enjoy the view.

Walk Around in Shamian Island
Shamian Island used to be an important port of Song to Qing Dynasties. Nowadays, tourists mostly visit this part of Guangzhou because of the 19th and 20th century buildings. There are more than 150 buildings with European architecture that is mixed with a little bit of Chinese architecture. Besides the buildings and statues that you can visit and see, it is a great spot for some walking around in peace and quiet. We also recommend a night-time visit to see another beautiful aspect of the neighborhoods.
Visit the Chen Clan Academy
The Chen Clan Academy or the Ancestral Hall is what remains of an influential family of the late 18th century. There are 6 courtyards in the Academy that are connected in a symmetrical pattern, as well as 19 buildings with 9 halls. This element of the Qing Dynasty history is now a museum that houses several beautiful items and artifacts. However, the best part of this visit is actually seeing the building itself. The construction of the complex uses a very traditional style of Guangzhou architecture.

Marvel at the Sacred Heart Cathedral
The Sacred Heart Cathedral, considered as the biggest of its kind in Guangzhou, is a building made of stone that was constructed in the 19th century. It took 25 years to complete to finish this place of worship for the Catholics of the city. While 25 years may sound too much, but it will definitely sound reasonable as you see the structure. If the amazing architecture of the Sacred Heart Cathedral does not impress you, enter the granite stone halls of this structure to see the beautiful glass windows and artworks inside.
Stroll in the Yuexiu Park
With an area of about 860,000 square meters, Yuexiu Park is the largest park in Guangzhou and a very popular attraction. Part of its fame is because of the Five Rams Sculpture that has even become a symbol of the city. Besides that, it is a very beautiful and peaceful part of this modern metropolis with its vibrant trees and lakes. Be sure to stroll around the Yuexiu Park and take your camera to take some pictures as this is perhaps the most picturesque part of Guangzhou.
Hiking up the Baiyun Mountain
If you want to see more of the natural landscape of Guangzhou you can go hiking in the Baiyun Mountain, also known as White Cloud Mountain. It has 30 peaks the highest of which is about 382 meters above sea level. The mountain offers 7 scenic areas filled with trees, gardens, and parks. If you have the time and are up for the challenge, you can go hiking around the area, if not, there are also cable cars that can take you to all the best areas.
Make a Visit to the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King
One of the must-see museums of Guangzhou and maybe even the world is the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King. This tomb is about 2000 years old and was discovered in 1983. Since this is the final resting place of the second king of Nanyue, there are thousands of relics and artifacts in addition to everyday objects, made out of jade. The museum was opened only a few years later after the discovery of this site and became a popular tourist attraction very quickly. Put this visit among the top things you will do in Guangzhou as it houses ancient items that you do not see every day.
Visit the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall
If you want to go to a place with traditional architecture, a beautiful yard, and a garden, which is very important in terms of history, you must visit the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. This building is constructed to commemorate the great Chinese revolutionary leader Sun Yat-Sen. Not only a prominent political figure of the country, but he was also a philosopher and a doctor. The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is near the southern end of Yuexiu Park and has a bronze statue of this great man in front who lived from 1866 to 1925.
Cruise on Pearl River
If you have been to all the best parts of Guangzhou, now it is time to go on a cruise on Pearl River to get yet another view of the city. The River passes from the middle of the city, giving with a beautiful scene of the city, this time from aboard a boat. The best time for a cruise is at nighttime and after a day of touring around this modern and traditional city. We recommend the night-time cruise since the nights of Guangzhou are especially beautiful with all the neon lights of the city.
Looking for More?
Being one of the largest and most important cities in China, Guangzhou will always have its fair share of fun activities. They may not be the top things and activities to do in Guangzhou, but they are always worth a visit. If you have more time on your travels or you are not new in town, be sure to consider these places and activities as well as our top 10 recommendations.
Some of the best places in the city which are good for all ages and groups are the performances of Guangzhou Opera House and exploring the Zhujiang New Town for shopping. If you are a fan of art and fashion, be sure to check the Redtory. After that, if you still have not tried the local Cantonese Food, make sure to try the Dim Sum with some tea for breakfast.
Do you want more historical places? Then check out the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, Guangdong Museum, and Huacheng Square. And at last, if the beautiful gardens of Guangzhou were to your liking, you must see the South China Botanical Garden, Baomo Garden, Yuyin Garden, Yuntai Garden, and the Xiaogang Park as well.
Again, there is always more to discover in this large city in southern China. If you have seen something else that you want to recommend to other travelers, be sure to leave a comment.

Guangzhou Food & Drink
Guangzhou is the capital city of the Guangdong province which was formerly called Canton. Since Chinese cuisine is quite regional, you must try the food of the former Canton province, aka the Cantonese food. This type of Chinese food is known to be mostly sweet and savory with various dishes including rice, seafood, meat, and local vegetables. Although you can find whatever you like to eat, it is best to try the local dishes first. The 5 most recommended food of this province are listed below as well as several other items:
Dim Sum
Dim Sum and Yum Cha are perhaps better brought together in this list since having some Yum Cha and Dim Sum is part of this province’s culture. But Dim Sum of Canton has so many varieties, that makes it difficult to say “you have to try Dim Sum with Yum Cha”. The Yum Cha is a kind of Chinese tea that is traditionally used in the morning while having some tasty Dim Sum for breakfast.
The Dim Sum is a unique experience when you try it with tea but has many other types as well. You can have one of these varieties for breakfast or lunch as a Canton original and traditional food.
White Cut Chicken
In China and especially Canton, the dishes are usually cooked in a way to bring out the original and true taste of the food. The White Cut Chicken is one such local dish that uses minimal secondary ingredients besides the small boiled chicken. The size and the timing are key here, and once the chicken is ready, it is sliced, and then you can add other ingredients to your liking. The original White Cut Chicken tastes light and fresh, but it is possible to see some restaurants use some kind of special ingredient to make it tastier for visitors.
Roasted Whole Suckling Pig
A very old cuisine used mostly for banquets is the Roasted Whole Suckling Pig or Kao Ru Zhu. The technique is ancient, which needs a lot of skill and must result in a dish that you will not soon forget. This mouthwatering piglet is first marinated in several ingredients and then roasted as a whole. There are two ways of preparing the Roasted Suckling Pig. It can be cooked over a low fire and with only a bit of oil, or on a big and hot fire with lots of oil that is continuously poured over the meat.

Sweet and Sour Pork
Although it did not originate in Guangzhou, the Sweet and Sour Pork of this province is something different from the rest of China. It dates back to the 18th century with some local modifications. If you already had a taste, be sure to give the Guangzhou’s crispy Sweet and Sour Pork a try.
Wonton Noodle
Wanton Noddle is one of the very ancient dishes of Guangzhou that dates back before the Common Era. It is a rather simple mixture of shrimps in a fish broth with noodles and dumplings. You usually see Bak Choi right next to your bowl, but it is possible to serve other vegetables such as leafy greens. Some people make it a little spicy, but it mostly has a light flavor.
Seafood
On a more general note, it is a very good idea to try the fish and seafood of this province since it is near the city. You can find some of the best seafood dishes with fresh fish and ingredients such as the Shrimp Dumplings. It is also recommended to look for dishes with the Shaomai fish in them; our recommendation is the Steamed Shaomai of Guangzhou.
Snacks
As you walk and explore the city streets keep an eye out for the snack stalls. There are so many things that can be bought as snacks or desserts in the restaurants, but you might need a bit of refreshing as you go shopping or sightseeing. Two of the snacks that you must try in Guangzhou are the Double-Skin Milk and the popular Rice Rolls. The Double-Skin Milk is soft, sweet, and very nutritious, it is especially great when you are about to go for a long walk. As for the Rice Rolls, they are like thin and soft noodles that can be filled with various kinds of meat. You can see them in the street stalls or even some traditional places as an entire meal which costs very little.

Unlicensed taxis, especially in airport and train stations, target tourists and they can be even dangerous.
Bargaining always works!
Bargaining is a must in shopping all over China including Guangzhou. Bargaining helps you to buy your desired goods at very reasonable prices.
Be aware of scamming and pickpockets
The crime rate in Guangzhou is relatively high in comparison with other cities like Guilin. Therefore, avoid carrying too much money as well as your valuable goods. Also be aware of pickpocketing, especially in crowded streets and shopping centers.
Be Careful When Crossing the Street
Like crimes, the accident rate in Guangzhou is relatively high; therefore, be careful when crossing streets.
