Troy (Truva)
Put Troy on top of your must-visit list while in Canakkale. It was discovered by a novice German archaeologist in 1871. Meander around this legendry site and travel through time where the myth of Hector, Paris, Achilles and the Trojan horse once lived.
Troy Museum
The Troy Museum is located near the Troy archaeological site entrance showcasing 5000 years of history and 2000 artifacts dug up during the site excavation. Explore the enormous history and mythology and go on a stroll over different ages of Troy. The Troy Museum houses coinage, ceramics, and marble statuary.
Cimenlik Castle
Fatih Sultan Mehmet II built Cimenlik Castle in 1462 to protect Dardanelles’ strait before different armies passing through this popular route. You’ll find two mosques in the castle’s inner courtyard style, including Fatih Camii and Abdulaziz Camii, named after the Ottoman sultans. The castle, also called Kale-i Sultaniye, is now situated in the area of the Military Museum. A word of caution: taking photographs is prohibited.
Military Museum
Çanakkale’s Military Museum was built celebrating the 67th anniversary of the Ottoman fleet victory in 1915. You’ll find scattered ancient military equipment and exhibits of the Gallipoli campaign inside the Ottoman building. The museum offers an opportunity to view the war from the Turkish point of view and panoramic views over the water.
Trojan Horse
The most famous tourist destination in the Canakkale is Troy’s ruins, experiencing ten-year fighting with the Greeks. The typical symbol of that war, the Trojan horse, is located 35 km north in an area by the shore.
Kilitbahir Fortress
Kilitbahir, a fishing harbor, is the home to the impressive Kilitbahir Fortress constructed by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1452. The firm interior tower was added to the structure by Süleyman the Magnificent. Climb up to the stunning defensive wall, which overlooks across the Dardanelles back to Çanakkale.
Northern Gallipoli Battlefields
Traveling to the Gallipoli Peninsula is mostly considered a religious journey in honor of the war’s savagery. Northern Gallipoli Battlefields was occupied in World War I by Allied forces attacking the Ottoman Empire. The savage campaign took nine months, and finally, the Turks were victorious, with over half a million casualties and 130,000 dead. You can see the sobering memorials spread on the pine-covered hills.
Southern Gallipoli Battlefields
The southern Gallipoli Peninsula hosts cemeteries and monuments of Turkish, French, and British cemeteries of soldiers murdered during the Gallipoli war. You can find dioramas and photos of the battles in the Gallery of the Gallipoli Campaign. The mammoth Abide Monument was built at Morto Bay in honor of Gallipolis’ dropped Turkish soldiers.
