Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 8-Day Trekking Tour
Free Cancellation · Instant confirmation · Pickup available
Your expedition begins with a scenic drive from Arusha through local villages to the western entrance of the mountain at Londorossi Gate for registration. After meeting your mountain crew and sorting the luggage, a brief drive takes you to the trailhead where you step onto the mountain. You will enjoy a peaceful afternoon hike through a pristine, lush canopy of the montane rainforest, listening to exotic birds and spotting black-and-white colobus monkeys before arriving at Big Tree Camp for your first night under canvas.
You leave the dense forest behind as the trail steepens and leads you into the striking moorland zone. You will cross a series of valley ridges and climb onto the vast expanses of the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. The landscape opens up dramatically to reveal panoramic views of the western breach of Kibo peak, and you will finish your afternoon walking across the rocky plateau to settle into your scenic camp just in time for sunset.
Spend a gentle, beautiful day exploring the ancient geological features of the Shira Plateau. You will hike across the high-altitude heather meadows, navigating a relatively flat trail toward the massive volcanic cone of Kibo peak. This easy-paced day serves as an important step for acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the elevation while you enjoy spectacular views of the rugged Shira Cathedral rock formations before reaching your evening campsite.
This is a defining day for your acclimatization as you follow the golden rule of climbing high and sleeping low. You will ascend into an alpine desert landscape to reach the iconic Lava Tower, a massive volcanic rock formation standing at 4,630 meters where you will stop for lunch. Afterward, you will descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, walking through a unique forest of alien-like giant groundsels and lobelia plants to reach your camp tucked neatly below the Great Barranco Wall.
Your morning begins with an exciting and fun scramble up the famous Great Barranco Wall, using your hands and feet to navigate the steep volcanic rock face. Reaching the top rewards you with breathtaking, close-up views of the southern glaciers. From there, you will traverse a series of valleys and hills across the barren alpine terrain, crossing the Karanga Valley before pulling into camp for a hot lunch and a restful afternoon to save your energy.
You will make a steady, steady climb up a rocky ridge to connect with the Mweka trail, which leads you to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit. The landscape turns entirely to stone and scree, surrounded by cold winds and a stark, beautiful atmosphere. You will arrive in the early afternoon, allowing you plenty of time to eat a hearty dinner, prepare your warm gear, and get to sleep early ahead of the midnight summit push.
Wake up around midnight for a light snack before starting the ultimate challenge in the freezing darkness. You will climb slowly over steep switchbacks of heavy volcanic scree, reaching Stella Point on the crater rim just as the sun begins to rise over the African continent. Another hour of hiking along the snow-lined rim brings you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the roof of Africa, you will make a long descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue downward into the forest zone to rest your tired muscles at Mweka Camp.
Your final morning on the mountain features a lovely walk through the lush, oxygen-rich rainforest down to Mweka Gate. At the gate, you will celebrate with your guides, porters, and cooks during a traditional tipping and singing ceremony, and you will receive your official gold summit certificate. A private vehicle will then pick you up and transfer you back to your lodge in Arusha for a long-awaited hot shower and a celebratory dinner.
