Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Tanzania (Kilimanjaro International Airport to Hotel)

  • Welcome to East Africa! Your private driver will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) right outside the arrivals terminal and transfer you to your hotel. Later in the afternoon, your head guide will meet you in the lobby for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing and a detailed gear check. We will help you rent any missing equipment on-site and ensure you are fully prepared before a restful night's sleep.

Day 2
  • Your adventure kicks off at Machame Gate for registration and crew packing. You will plunge straight into the dense, vibrant cloud forest on a winding, ridge-line trail. The path is often muddy and atmospheric, offering a great chance to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys hiding in the moss-draped canopy before you arrive at Machame Camp for your first night under the stars.

Day 3
  • You leave the lush rainforest glades behind as the trail steepens drastically into the heather and moorland zone. You will climb along a rocky, exposed spine and cross a deep river gorge onto the vast, expansive Shira Plateau one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic calderas. The open terrain rewards you with dramatic views of Kibo Peak directly ahead.

Day 4
  • A massive day for your high-altitude acclimatization following the classic "climb high, sleep low" rule. You will head east across the rocky alpine desert up to the towering Lava Tower formation at 4,630 meters for a hot lunch in the thin air. Afterward, you will make a scenic descent into the dramatic Barranco Valley, walking among otherworldly giant groundsels (Senecio) to camp right beneath the iconic Great Barranco Wall.

Day 5
  • The Wilderness Challenge Day

The Wilderness Challenge Day. You start the morning with an exciting, hands-on scramble up the nearly 900-foot Great Barranco Wall, rewarding you at the top with spectacular views of Kibo's southern glaciers. Instead of staying overnight, you will descend into and out of the steep Karanga Valley gorge, pausing for a quick trail meal before pushing steadily upward through a frozen landscape of bare rock to reach Barafu Base Camp by late afternoon. Hydrate, eat an early dinner, and sleep before the midnight wake-up call.

Day 6

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (Summit) to Mweka Camp

  • Wake up at midnight for hot tea and a freezing alpine push

Wake up at midnight for hot tea and a freezing alpine push. Moving in a slow, synchronized pole pole rhythm, you will ascend steep switchbacks of loose volcanic scree in the pitch dark. You will reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5,756 m) just as a magnificent sunrise paints the African sky. An hour's push past massive ancient ice walls brings you to Uhuru Peak—the Roof of Africa! After celebrating, you descend rapidly back to Barafu for a hot lunch, then continue downward into the forest zone to sleep soundly at Mweka Camp.

Day 7
  • Your final morning on the mountain features a celebratory descent down through the lush, oxygen-rich rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you will join your guiding team and porters for the traditional tipping ceremony, share mountain songs, and receive your official gold summit certificate before your private vehicle meets you to head back to town for a celebratory hot shower.

Day 8
  • Enjoy a relaxing, well-deserved breakfast at the hotel. If your flight leaves later in the day, you can spend the morning resting, swimming, or exploring the local markets for Tanzanian souvenirs like hand-woven baskets or local coffee. Your private driver will pick you up from the hotel and transfer you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in time for your check-in, ready for your flight home or your onward wildlife safari!
