Festival of the Black Christ
The Black Christ, also famous as the Nazareno, is a well-revered religious statue in Portobelo. The Black Christ festival is annually held in October to celebrate the figure displayed by a life-size wooden statue located in the Iglesia de San Felipe.
Iglesia San Felipe
Iglesia San Felipe is a Catholic church dating back to 1814, where you’ll find the Black Christ figure. The Spanish constructed the church before leaving Panama. Now, the church is filled with pilgrims coming every October 21st to celebrate the Black Christ Festival.
Fuerte San Jeronimo
The largest fort in Portobelo, the Fuerte San Jeronimo, was constructed with 18 cannons embrasures facing the bay to protect and save the harbor city from pirate attack. You can still see officers’ quarters and watchtowers in this Spanish-built fort.
