Go whale watching
Mirissa is renowned for its lovely whale-watching cruises in calm, warm, and favorable ocean conditions. Make sure to plan a trip to Mirissa during the whale watching season from November to April.
Polhena Beach/ Turtle Beach
One of the most stunning southern coast beaches, Turtle Beach is situated 7 km from Mirissa. The calm, shallow bay is the permanent habitat of 15 turtles. Enjoy snorkeling at the waves-protected beach and soak in the thrilling experience of swimming with the turtles. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll find the chance to see a baby released on the beach hatchery.
Parrot Rock
A large rock at the end of Mirissa Bay, Parrot Rock delivers you stunning views of Mirissa Beach. Swim and snorkel in the calm area and enjoy the peacefulness in the rock pools below.
Coconut Tree Hill
A small hill rich in Coconut trees can provide a perfect and beautiful frame for Instagram shots. Coconut Tree Hill is a popular spot to witness the sunset; however, don’t expect a romantic, calm sunset experience as it’s an almost busy and populated spot. A friendly piece of advice: early morning before sunrise is the least busy time to relax and watch the ocean on yourself. Just make sure to watch out for coconuts falling down.
Galle Fort
However, the Portuguese constructed Galle Fort in 1588, but the Dutch fortified the fort in the 17th century. Explore around the fort and visit the historical museum of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Stilt Fishermen
Stilt Fishing is a traditional Sri Lankan fishing method in which fishers sit on wooden poles and hang a stick in the water, flicking it up and down to catch Spotted Herrings and small Mackerels. You’ll find a group of fishermen on the outskirts of the Weligama towards Galle. Stilt Fishing, banned for many years following the 2004 tsunami, is an unequaled attraction that increased in recent years that you may never find anywhere else.
The Dondra Lighthouse
The Dondra Lighthouse is located in the southern spots of Sri Lanka, encircled by palm trees and lovely beaches.
