Itinerary

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m

    Distance: ~8 km | Hiking Time: 3–5 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

    Overview: After a brief orientation and registration at Marangu Gate, begin your ascent through the lush, dense rainforest. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy. Arrive at Mandara Hut, take an optional short side walk to the Maundi Crater for scenic views, and settle into your cozy wooden hut for the evening.

Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m

    Distance: ~12 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Moorland

    Overview: Leave the rainforest behind as the trail opens up into giant heather and moorland landscapes. Catch your first striking views of Mawenzi Peak and the Kibo summit. Enjoy lunch on the trail before arriving at Horombo Hut, situated above the cloud line.

Day 3

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m

    Distance: ~10 km | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

    Overview: Trek across the vast, lunar-like landscape known as "The Saddle," stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon, partake in a hearty early dinner, and get maximum sleep before your midnight summit attempt.

Day 4

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (Summit) & Descend to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Summit) down to 3,720m

    Distance: ~6 km ascent / 15 km descent | Hiking Time: 11–15 hours total | Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland

    Overview: Begin your midnight push up steep scree under the stars toward Gilman's Point. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, just as sunrise lights up the glaciers. After capturing summit memories, descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and well-deserved sleep.

Day 5
  • Elevation: 3,720m down to 1,860m

    Distance: ~20 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

    Overview: Complete a steady final descent down through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Collect your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates and say farewell to your mountain crew. Transfer to your hotel for a long hot shower, a restful night, and preparation for your safari.

Day 6

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

  • Distance / Drive Time: ~2.5 to 3 hours

    Habitat: Savanna & Baobab Woodland

    Overview: Board your 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and head to Tarangire National Park, famous for its massive elephant herds and towering ancient baobab trees. Spend the day on game drives following the Tarangire River, a vital watering hole attracting lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and buffalos. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park before heading to your lodge/camp near Karatu or Ngorongoro for dinner.

Day 7

Ngorongoro Crater Floor Drive to Arusha

  • Distance / Drive Time: ~4 hours return to Arusha

    Habitat: Caldera / Wetlands & Grassland

    Overview: Early morning descent 600 meters down into the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, an intact volcanic caldera brimming with wildlife. Search for the Big Five in a single morning, including the endangered black rhino, hippos at the pool, and active lion prides. After a picnic lunch inside the crater, ascend to the rim and drive back to Arusha/Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward journey.
