Transport: Private Airport Transfer Included
Accommodation: Pre-climb Hotel Stay (Moshi or Arusha)
Welcome to East Africa! Your private driver will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) right outside the arrivals terminal and transfer you to your hotel. In the afternoon, your head guide will meet you in the lobby for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing and a meticulous gear check to ensure you are fully equipped for this long, remote wilderness expedition.
Elevation: 2,100 m to 2,650 m | Distance: 7 km | Trek Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
You begin the morning with a drive to Londorossi Gate for registration before continuing to the Lemosho Glades trailhead. Your hike starts under the canopy of a pristine, undisturbed rainforest where wildlife thrives. You will trek along winding forest paths, listening to exotic birds and spotting colobus monkeys, before arriving at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp for your first night in the wild.
Elevation: 2,650 m to 3,850 m | Distance: 16 km | Trek Time: 7–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today is a long but rewarding day. You climb out of the forest zone and cross the steep volcanic ridge of the Shira Plateau. The trail levels out as you traverse the spectacular heather-covered heath fields of the plateau, passing Shira 1 Camp and heading directly toward Shira 2 Camp. From here, you will enjoy sweeping views of the Western Breach and the vast plains below.
Elevation: 3,850 m to 4,600 m (Lava Tower) to 4,200 m (Moir Hut) | Distance: 14 km | Trek Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
You head east into the high alpine desert, trekking up toward the iconic Lava Tower—a massive 90-meter volcanic rock formation at 4,600 meters where you will stop for a hot lunch to aid acclimatization. Instead of dropping south into the crowded Barranco Valley, you will veer north along the quiet, isolated path leading to Moir Hut, a secluded camp tucked into a scenic gorge at the base of the Lent Hills.
Elevation: 4,200 m to 4,020 m | Distance: 12 km | Trek Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Moorland
You break out of the Moir Valley with a moderately steep climb up the Lent Hills before joining the official Northern Circuit trail. Today features an incredible, uncrowded trek across rolling high-altitude ridges on the northern slopes, offering rare views looking across the border into Kenya. You will descend slightly to arrive at Buffalo Camp (also known as Pofu Camp) for a peaceful night under the stars.
Elevation: 4,020 m to 3,800 m | Distance: 8 km | Trek Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Moorland
Today is a shorter hike designed to give your body a chance to recover and adapt before the summit push. You continue your traverse along the remote northern ridges, crossing small valleys and volcanic valleys where little vegetation survives. The trail eventually hooks up with the Rongai Route path, leading you to Third Cave Camp where you will enjoy a relaxed afternoon resting and hydrating.
Elevation: 3,800 m to 4,800 m | Distance: 6 km | Trek Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
You climb steadily upward through the stark alpine desert today, making your way to School Hut. This camp sits in a striking, windswept location right below the Kibo crater wall. You will arrive in the early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to organize your summit gear, eat a hearty early dinner, and get to sleep by 7:00 PM ahead of the midnight wake-up call.
Elevation: 4,800 m to 5,895 m (Summit) down to 3,700 m
Distance: 6 km ascent / 16 km descent | Trek Time: 6–8 hours up / 4–5 hours down
Habitat: Arctic Summit / Moorland
Summit Day. Wake up at midnight for hot tea before stepping out into the freezing alpine dark. Moving in a slow, steady pole pole rhythm, you will ascend the steep volcanic scree switchbacks up to the crater rim at Gilman’s Point (5,685 m). Arriving around dawn, you will continue past Stella Point and along the glacier-lined rim to Uhuru Peak—the Roof of Africa! After celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to School Hut for a quick rest, then continue downward via the southern slopes to stay at Horombo Huts.
Elevation: 3,700 m to 1,860 m | Distance: 20 km | Trek Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your final day on the mountain is a long, rewarding downhill trek through the lush, oxygen-rich rainforest on the southern slopes. Once you reach Marangu Gate, you will gather with your guiding team and dedicated porters for the traditional tipping ceremony and celebratory songs. You will receive your official gold summit certificate before your private vehicle picks you up to head back to town for a well-deserved hot shower.
Transport: Private Airport Transfer Included
