Founded in the 11th century, the monastery is considered to be one of the wealthiest and most ornate monasteries on the island. The Kykkos Monastery is home to several important religious artefacts, the main of each is the icon of the Virgin Mary which is said to have miraculous power. Legend has it that the icon was painted by St. Luke during his lifetime. Visitors to the Kykkos Monastery can also enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the monastery's terrace. The area is covered in lush forests and beautiful flora, making it a perfect place for a peaceful and relaxing stroll.
Another important landmark in the Troodos Mountains is the Tomb of Archbishop Makarios. The tomb is located on Mount Throni, which overlooks the Kykkos Monastery. The height of Throni is 1,318 meters. The Kykkos Monastery is located on the slope of this mountain at an altitude of 1,140 meters. The tomb of Archbishop Makarios, at his own request, is located in the area between the Kykkos Monastery and the Throni of Panagia Kykkou, offering a beautiful view of the whole of Cyprus. The Archbishop, during his lifetime, gave specific instructions to the architect Andreas Philippus regarding the tomb and the surrounding area. This Tomb is the final resting place of Cyprus' first president and is an important pilgrimage site for many Cypriots.
