Kyrenia, also known as Girne, is a captivating city on the northern coast of Cyprus, beloved by travelers for its stunning beaches, picturesque harbor, and rich history. Nestled on the slopes of the Kyrenia Mountains, the city is surrounded by fragrant pine forests, olive groves, and citrus orchards, creating a beautiful natural backdrop.
The heart of Kyrenia’s charm lies in its historic center, where narrow streets wind past traditional buildings and centuries-old landmarks. Dominating the skyline is Kyrenia Castle, a fortress originally built by the Byzantines in the 7th century and later enhanced by the Venetians and Ottomans. Today, it houses a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s cultural heritage.
Perched high above the city is the dramatic St. Hilarion Castle, a medieval stronghold that offers breathtaking panoramic views. This enchanting castle is said to have inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, making it a magical spot for memorable photos.
Not far from Kyrenia lies the serene Bellapais Abbey, a stunning example of Gothic architecture built by Crusaders in the early 13th century. The monastery’s two-tiered refectory, renowned for its excellent acoustics, hosts annual music festivals, while the ruins overlook the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and the city below. Bellapais Abbey’s walls tell stories of Genoese, Turkish, and English rule, each leaving a unique imprint on this historic monument.
