Day 2 Chiang Mai city & Doi Suthep

Located inside the old city wall, at the western end of Ratchadamnoen Road, the temple’s signature Lanna-style roofs and glittering viharn (assembly hall) invite visitors. The walled-in temple compound is busy with visitors and worshippers all year round and is usually packed during the Thai New Year festival (Songkran) in mid-April.
Wat Phan Tao is a beautiful wooden temple with a decorated garden area. Sitting next to the famous Wat Chedi Luang this temple is often overlooked but worth a visit. Especially when the more famous religious complexes in the area are overrun with tourists in the high season. When you enter, the main prayer hall is to your right and a walkway on your left leads you to the stupa at the back. The prayer hall is made from dark teak wood and inside is a gold image of the Buddha. The prayer hall was built back when the teak trade was at its peak and the wood was an offering to the Buddha
Wat Chedi Luang's massive chedi (pagoda) was built sometime between 1385 and 1402, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 7th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty and is a distinctive feature of the Chiang Mai skyline. At its peak, the chedi measured 60 metres across at the square base and 80 metres tall and was once the home of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred religious relic
you will stroll along small streets lined with traditional houses, where you will take rickshaw tour. After that, you will take a walking through the central market of Warorot.

We found our time exploring the local culture and natural beauty quite enriching, especially during our stay at a charming lodge that felt like a home away from home. The bamboo rafting offered a unique perspective of the lush landscape, though the weather was a bit unpredictable at times, adding a layer of adventure to our experience.

From the moment we arrived in Mueang Chiang Rai, the blend of culture and nature captivated us. One of our favorite memories was camping under the stars after a day filled with exploring Doi Suthep; it felt like we were part of the landscape. The bamboo rafting experience was both peaceful and exhilarating, gliding down the river while listening to the sounds of nature around us. However, the accommodations at the camp could have been a bit more comfortable; we weren’t quite prepared for the outdoor elements. Overall, this immersive journey truly brought our family closer together as we embraced the local culture and breathtaking surroundings.

Our family had an incredible time on this cultural journey, exploring stunning natural landscapes and engaging with the local culture. The highlight for us was definitely the bamboo rafting; gliding down the gentle river while surrounded by lush greenery was both thrilling and serene. We enjoyed delicious meals featuring traditional Thai dishes at the nature camp, although we wish there had been a bit more variety in the dinner options. Visiting Doi Suthep was another unforgettable experience, offering breathtaking views that made the moderate hike well worth it. Overall, this was a perfect blend of adventure and cultural immersion, making for a memorable escape together.
