Why we love it?

This 6-day Rongai Route trek offers a northern approach to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, known for its drier climate and quieter wilderness. Starting from Moshi, you’ll pass through rural villages to the Nalemuru Gate before trekking through rainforest habitats where Colobus monkeys may be spotted. The route takes you past the Second Cave and through moorland with views of the Kenyan plains, reaching campsites like Simba Camp and Kikelewa Camp nestled beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. You’ll cross "The Saddle," a high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo, before arriving at Kibo Hut in preparation for the midnight summit attempt. The climb continues to Gilman’s Point and the summit at Uhuru Peak, where you can see the glaciers and sunrise before descending to Horombo Hut and then down to Marangu Gate. The trek emphasizes safety with medical checks and emergency oxygen, while supporting local communities through social impact initiatives. This route suits travelers seeking a less crowded, wilderness-focused Kilimanjaro experience with expert guidance and a connection to the region’s natural and cultural landscape.

Today’s trek leads us through the moorland zone. You will enjoy vast views of the Kenyan plains below. We pass the Second Cave for lunch before heading toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The terrain becomes more rugged as we approach Kikelewa Camp, located in a scenic valley.

Day 3
  • This is a shorter but steeper climbing day

This is a shorter but steeper climbing day. We head up toward the Mawenzi Tarn, which is situated in a high-altitude wilderness. The campsite is nestled in a spectacular cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. The afternoon is spent resting and acclimatizing to the higher altitude.

Day 4
  • We cross the lunar-like landscape of "The Saddle," a high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail is relatively flat but the thin air makes it a steady challenge. We arrive at Kibo Hut early in the afternoon to eat, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 5
  • We begin our summit push around midnight

We begin our summit push around midnight. The climb to Gilman’s Point and then to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is challenging but rewarding with a spectacular sunrise over the glaciers. After celebrating at the peak, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut for our final night on the mountain.

Day 6
