Private 3-Day Desert Tour to Merzouga Dunes from Marrakech
Free Cancellation · Instant confirmation · Private tour
Your Sahara odyssey begins the moment we meet you. Your dedicated local driver and tour companion will pick you up directly from your hotel or riad in Marrakech — if your accommodation is inside the medina and vehicles cannot access it, we will arrange a meeting point just a short walk away.
You head south on an approximately 3-hour drive covering around 200 km, climbing through the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. At 2,260 meters above sea level this is one of the highest mountain roads in North Africa — your companion will stop at the summit for 15 to 20 minutes so you can soak in the panoramic views, grab a coffee and stretch your legs while sharing stories about the Berber villages nestled in the mountains around you.
You then descend toward Ait Benhaddou — a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah standing since the 11th century and famous worldwide as a filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and The Mummy. Your certified local guide will bring its extraordinary history to life with a walking tour of the ancient village. You continue to Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa, for an overnight stay.
Dinner is included this evening in Ouarzazate.
After breakfast your driver and companion takes you southeast along the magnificent Draa Valley — one of the longest and most beautiful river valleys in Morocco, where a ribbon of lush green palmery stretches for over 200 km through the pre-Saharan landscape, flanked by ancient mud-brick kasbahs and Berber villages that have guarded this valley for centuries.
Your companion will share the extraordinary history of the Draa Valley — once one of the great caravan routes of the Sahara, carrying gold, salt and slaves between sub-Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean world. You pass through Agdz, Tamegroute — home to an ancient library of manuscripts dating back to the 11th century — and the spectacular Tinfou dunes before arriving at M'Hamid el Ghizlane, the last town before the great desert.
M'Hamid is where the road ends and the Sahara begins. From here your companion and a local Berber 4x4 team take you deep into the Chegaga Desert — one of the most remote and spectacular desert landscapes in all of Morocco, far from the crowds of Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi, reaching dunes that tower over 40 meters and stretch in every direction to the horizon.
A traditional luxury desert camp awaits in the heart of the Chegaga dunes — a camp of extraordinary beauty and silence, where the only sounds are the wind across the sand and the crackle of the campfire. Dinner is included this evening at the camp with live Berber music under a sky of impossible stars.
Rise before dawn for the Chegaga sunrise — watching the desert turn from deep blue to gold to blazing orange is one of the most breathtaking experiences Morocco has to offer. After a traditional Berber breakfast at camp your Berber guides lead you on a morning camel trek through the Chegaga dunes — a gentle, guided experience through one of the most remote and beautiful desert landscapes in North Africa, suitable for most fitness levels.
If you prefer not to ride a camel, a 4x4 desert drive through the dunes is available at an additional cost — your tour companion will arrange this for you on the day.
After the morning in Chegaga your companion drives you northeast across the desert and pre-Saharan plains toward Merzouga and the legendary Erg Chebbi dunes — a completely different desert experience from Chegaga, where the dunes reach over 150 meters and glow with a deep, rich orange that is unlike anything else in Morocco.
You arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon with time to walk to the edge of the dunes, explore the village and watch the extraordinary light of the Erg Chebbi at sunset before dinner. Overnight in a comfortable hotel at the foot of the dunes.
Dinner is included this evening in Merzoug
Rise early one final time for the Erg Chebbi sunrise — watching the Merzouga dunes ignite in the morning light is a perfect farewell to the Sahara. After breakfast your companion begins the long and beautiful return journey to Marrakech — approximately 7 hours with regular comfort stops every 1.5 to 2 hours for coffee, a stretch or a toilet break.
The route takes you north through the stunning Ziz Valley and its vast palmeries — date palms stretching for miles along the river, one of the most beautiful and peaceful oasis landscapes in the south of Morocco. You pass through the ancient town of Erfoud, famous for its extraordinary fossils, and continue north through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas where Barbary macaques are often spotted along the roadside.
Your companion will share stories of the landscapes and communities you pass through as Marrakech draws closer. You arrive in the early evening — your companion dropping you off directly at your hotel or riad. If your accommodation is inside the medina and vehicles cannot access it, we will drop you at the nearest accessible point, just a short walk away.
