Why we love it?

This private guided tour in Marrakech explores the intertwined histories of Judaism and Islam in Morocco, focusing on their shared cultural heritage over more than a thousand years. You will walk through the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, and visit the Lazama Synagogue, an active and well-preserved site reflecting the Jewish community’s enduring presence. The journey continues into the Islamic heart of the medina with visits to the Bahia Palace, known for its painted cedarwood ceilings and intricate tilework, and the Koutoubia Mosque, whose 12th-century minaret inspired notable towers in Seville and Rabat. Your certified guide will highlight the connections between these two faiths, including their Andalusian roots, musical traditions, and historic coexistence, concluding the tour with traditional Moroccan mint tea and pastries at a medina café. Itinerary

Meet at Marrakech Hotel or Riad

Stop 1

Your experience begins with a meeting at your hotel or riad in Marrakech — if your accommodation is inside the medina and has a difficult address, your companion will coordinate a clear and simple meeting point with you in advance. Your dedicated local tour companion and certified guide will take you on a private journey through one of the most fascinating and least-known chapters of Moroccan history — the extraordinary story of Jewish and Islamic coexistence in the Kingdom of Morocco, a story that stretches back over a thousand years and is unlike the story of any other country in the world.

Morocco is home to the oldest Jewish community in the diaspora — Jews have lived in this land since at least the 6th century BCE, nearly a thousand years before the arrival of Islam. For most of that history the two communities lived side by side in a relationship of remarkable complexity, creativity and mutual influence — trading together, sharing neighbourhoods, collaborating in medicine, philosophy, music and commerce, and building a shared Moroccan culture that expressed itself differently in every city and every generation.

Your certified guide will take you through the living evidence of this shared heritage in Marrakech — beginning in the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter of the city established in the 16th century. The Mellah of Marrakech is one of the oldest and best preserved in Morocco, its distinctive architecture — taller buildings than the rest of the medina, with wooden balconies overlooking the narrow streets — still standing as a reminder of the community that once filled these lanes with the sounds of Hebrew prayer, Judeo-Moroccan music and the commerce of a thriving trading quarter.

You will visit the Lazama Synagogue — one of the most beautiful and moving Jewish spaces in Morocco, still active and lovingly maintained, its walls covered in hand-painted blue and white tilework and its atmosphere one of extraordinary peace and dignity. Your guide will share the history of the synagogue and the Jewish community of Marrakech — its origins, its golden periods, its difficulties and its legacy.

From the Mellah your guide takes you through the Islamic heart of the medina — to the magnificent Bahia Palace with its extraordinary painted cedarwood ceilings and intricate zellij tilework, to the Koutoubia Mosque — the spiritual and architectural heart of Marrakech, whose 12th-century minaret became the model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat — and through the ancient Koranic school quarter where the traditions of Islamic scholarship have been maintained for centuries.

Your guide will draw the connections between the two traditions throughout the tour — the shared Andalusian heritage that both communities brought to Morocco after the fall of Granada in 1492, the Judeo-Moroccan musical tradition of the malhun and the andalusi, the shared spice markets and trading routes, and the extraordinary figure of King Mohammed V who publicly refused to distinguish between his Jewish and Muslim subjects during the darkest years of the 20th century.

The tour ends with mint tea and Moroccan pastries at a beautiful traditional café in the medina — a moment of reflection at the end of a journey through one of the most remarkable stories of human coexistence in history.
