Private 3-Day Desert Tour to Merzouga Dunes from Marrakech
Free Cancellation · Instant confirmation · Private tour
Your desert caravan begins the moment we meet you. Your dedicated local driver and tour companion will pick you up directly from your hotel or riad in Marrakech — if your accommodation is inside the medina and vehicles cannot access it, we will arrange a meeting point just a short walk away.
You head south on an approximately 3-hour drive covering around 200 km, climbing through the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. At 2,260 meters above sea level this is one of the highest mountain roads in North Africa — your companion will stop at the summit for 15 to 20 minutes so you can soak in the panoramic views, grab a coffee and stretch your legs while sharing stories about the Berber villages nestled in the mountains around you.
You then descend toward Ait Benhaddou — a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah standing since the 11th century and famous worldwide as a filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and The Mummy. Your certified local guide will bring its extraordinary history to life with a walking tour of the ancient village. You continue to Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa, approximately 30 minutes further, for an overnight stay.
Dinner is included this evening in Ouarzazate.
After breakfast your driver and companion takes you east along the legendary Route of a Thousand Kasbahs — one of the most spectacular drives in all of Morocco, where ancient earthen fortresses line the road against a backdrop of palm oases, rocky escarpments and the snow-capped Atlas peaks on the horizon.
You pass through the Valley of Roses — the rose-growing heartland of Morocco, famous for its extraordinary annual rose harvest every May and the precious rosewater and rose oil that have been produced here for centuries. Your companion will share the story of this remarkable valley and its traditions as you drive through the pink and green landscape.
You arrive in the afternoon at the Dades Gorge — one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in Morocco, where the Dades River has carved extraordinary rock formations through the Atlas foothills. You check in to a comfortable guesthouse in the gorge with views straight up the canyon walls and have time to walk or drive into the gorge before dinner.
Dinner is included this evening in the Dades Gorge.
Rise early to see the Dades Gorge in the magical morning light — the canyon walls glow orange and red as the sun rises above the rock formations. After breakfast your companion drives you east to the Todra Gorge — canyon walls rising 300 meters on both sides of the narrow river below, one of the most breathtaking and dramatic landscapes in all of Morocco. You will have time to walk through the gorge and stand beneath walls of rock that dwarf everything around them.
From Todra your companion continues the journey southeast toward the Sahara — the landscape becoming increasingly dramatic and arid as you approach the great desert. You pass through the Tafilalet oasis — a vast palmery stretching for miles along the Ziz River, one of the largest oasis landscapes in the world — and through the ancient town of Erfoud, famous for its fossils.
By late afternoon you arrive at Merzouga and catch your first sight of the legendary Erg Chebbi dunes — some of the tallest in Morocco at over 150 meters, glowing gold and red in the afternoon sun. At sunset your camel trek begins, guided by our experienced local Berber team deep into the golden dunes. A traditional camp awaits with a candlelit dinner, live Berber music around the fire and a sky absolutely full of stars above the Sahara.
Dinner is included this evening at the desert cam
Rise before dawn to watch the Sahara turn gold in the morning light — one of the most breathtaking and humbling moments of the entire journey. After a traditional Berber breakfast at camp your companion takes you back to Merzouga for a morning of exploration at a gentler pace.
You visit the village of Merzouga — a small, warm and completely authentic Saharan community at the foot of the dunes — and have the opportunity to visit a local Gnawa musician's home and hear the ancient music of the desert people. Your companion will also take you to a fossil workshop in Erfoud where craftsmen work the extraordinary trilobite fossils that are found in abundance in this region of Morocco.
The afternoon is spent exploring the Ziz Valley and its magnificent palmeries — date palms stretching as far as the eye can see along the river, one of the most beautiful and peaceful landscapes in the south of Morocco. You overnight in a comfortable hotel in the Ziz Valley or Erfoud area.
Dinner is included this evening.
After breakfast your companion begins the long and beautiful return journey to Marrakech — approximately 7 hours with regular comfort stops every 1.5 to 2 hours for coffee, a stretch or a toilet break. The route takes you north through the Ziz Valley and up into the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas — a landscape completely unlike the desert you have spent the last few days in, cool and green and full of birdsong.
Your companion will point out the Barbary macaques that live in the cedar forests of Azrou — one of the great and unexpected wildlife encounters of a Moroccan road trip — and share stories of the Middle Atlas Berber communities who have lived in these mountains for millennia.
You pass through Beni Mellal and across the Haouz Plain toward Marrakech, arriving in the early evening. Your companion drops you off directly at your hotel or riad. If your accommodation is inside the medina and vehicles cannot access it, we will drop you at the nearest accessible point, just a short walk away.
