Private 3-Day Desert Tour to Merzouga Dunes from Marrakech
Free Cancellation · Instant confirmation · Private tour
Your day begins with a pickup directly from your hotel or riad in Marrakech if your accommodation is inside the medina and vehicles cannot access it, we will arrange a meeting point just a short walk away. Your dedicated local driver and tour companion will take you south on an approximately 3-hour drive covering around 200 km, climbing through the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass one of the highest mountain roads in North Africa at 2,260 meters above sea level.
Your companion will stop at the summit for 15 to 20 minutes so you can soak in the panoramic views across the mountains, grab a coffee and stretch your legs while sharing stories about the Berber villages nestled in the valleys around you. The descent toward the south brings a dramatic change in landscape from green mountain slopes to the arid, golden pre-Saharan plains that stretch toward the horizon.
Your first stop is Ait Benhaddou a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah that has stood since the 11th century and is one of the most perfectly preserved examples of southern Moroccan earthen architecture in existence. Famous worldwide as a filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Lawrence of Arabia and dozens of other major productions, the kasbah rises in tiers of mud-brick towers above the Ounila River. Your certified local guide will bring its extraordinary history to life with a walking tour of the ancient village, pointing out the filming locations and sharing the stories of the families who still live within its walls.
From Ait Benhaddou you continue approximately 30 minutes further to Ouarzazate known as the Hollywood of Africa and home to some of the largest film studios in the world. Your companion will take you through the city, past the famous Atlas Film Studios where productions from Gladiator to Game of Thrones to The Jewel of the Nile were filmed, and share the fascinating story of how this remote Moroccan city became one of the world's great filmmaking destinations.
Lunch is included at a traditional restaurant in Ouarzazate before your companion drives you back over the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech, arriving in the early evening.
