Stop 1

Your experience begins with a pickup from your hotel or riad in Fes — if your accommodation is inside the medina and vehicles cannot access it, we will arrange a meeting point just a short walk away. Your dedicated local tour companion and certified guide will take you deep into the heart of Fes el-Bali — the oldest and largest living medieval medina in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site that has barely changed in a thousand years.

Fes el-Bali is not a museum — it is a living, breathing city where donkeys still carry goods through streets too narrow for cars, where artisans hammer brass and carve cedarwood in workshops unchanged since the Middle Ages, and where the call to prayer echoes off walls that have heard it every day since the 9th century. Your certified local guide will bring every corner of it to life.

You will visit the famous Chouara Tannery — one of the oldest leather tanneries in the world and one of the most extraordinary sights in all of Morocco. From the terraces above, you will look down over the ancient stone vats filled with natural dyes in vivid shades of saffron, poppy red, indigo and green, watching the tanners work exactly as their ancestors did centuries ago. Your guide will explain the entire process from raw hide to finished leather and the history of the tannery families who have worked here for generations.

From the tanneries your guide will lead you through the covered souks — the coppersmiths' quarter, the woodworkers' souk, the spice market, the dyers' souk and the jewellery district — each one a sensory world of its own. You will visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 AD and recognised as the oldest continuously operating university in the world, and walk through the magnificent Bou Inania Madrasa with its intricate zellij tilework, carved stucco and cedarwood screens.

Your guide will share the stories, the history and the hidden details that make Fes one of the most extraordinary cities on earth — and take you to corners of the medina that most visitors never find.

Please Note

  • This is a private tour — just you and the people you choose to share it with. No shared groups, no strangers.
  • Pickup is from your hotel or riad in Fes. If your accommodation is inside the medina and vehicles cannot access it, a meeting point just a short walk away will be arranged for you.
  • A valid passport or national ID is recommended to carry at all times in Morocco.
  • The Fes medina involves extensive walking on uneven cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways and some uphill paths. Comfortable, sturdy flat-soled shoes are strongly recommended. The tour is at a relaxed pace but involves a good amount of walking and is not recommended for travelers with significant mobility difficulties.
  • The tannery area has a strong smell from the natural dyes and hides — this is completely normal and part of the authentic experience. Vendors at the tannery viewing terraces may offer sprigs of mint to hold under your nose, which helps.
  • The medina can be busy and the alleyways very narrow. Your guide will always keep you oriented and safe throughout the tour.
  • Infant seats are available on request — please mention at the time of booking if you are travelling with a young child.
