The Pearl River, also known as the Canton River (Zhujiang in Chinese), is an extensive river system in southern China and ranks the third-longest river in the country. How large is the Pearl River?
The Pearl River is made up of four distinctive river systems. These four river systems meet each other in the city of Guangzhou. Then the river flows for around 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) and pours into the South Sea. The four distinctive river systems of Pearl River are:
- The Xi River, which originates from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau
- The Liuxi River, which originates from Conghua City in Guangdong Province
- The Bei River, which originates from Jiangxi Province
- The Dong River which also originates from Jiangxi Province
The Pearl River is around 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles), which makes it the third-longest river in China after the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. The Pearl River also has the title second-largest by volume in China, while the Yangtze River is the first.
Why is it called Pearl River?
When the people hear the name Pearl River, Guangzhou City name would instantly come to their mind. Pearl River used to be called The Pearl Sea in the olden days. This name was due to its vast channel width which reached 2,000 meters (around 2,187 yards). During the time, this width of this channel started to gradually shrink until today that it has significantly changed and became only 180 meters (about 197 yards).
There is also another theory for the river’s name. It is said that the name Pearl River is derived from a large rock, located on the river bed. This huge boulder is called Sea Pearl due to its smooth and round surface, which resembles a shining and large pearl.

Guangzhou has experienced many modern developments, and today there are ten functional bridges over this beautiful river. As you can walk along the banks of Pearl River in Guangzhou, you will see high-rise buildings like star-grade hotels and a large number of modern shopping malls.

Wenshu Monastery of Chengdu
Wenshu Monastery, also known as Manjushri Monastery and Wenshu Temple, is one of Chengdu’s best-preserved Buddhist temples. Wenshu Monastery History
According to Legends, the temple was originally built during the Sui Dynasty (581 to 618) by one of Princess Yang Xiu consorts, son to Emperor Wendi. Later during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms to China (907 to 960), the temple name changed to Miaoyuan Tayuan. The name changed again during the reign of the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279) to Xinxiang Temple.
The temple experience a heavy fire during the end of the Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644). It was told that the fire consumed everything in the temple except ten iron statues of Buddhist deities and 2000 years old fir trees.
When the Qing Dynasty came to rule (1644 to 1911), the temple situation got better. In 1681, during the time of Emperor Kangxi, master Cidu visited this place and constructed a thatched cottage. The temple was renamed for the last time then and it was named Wenshu Monastery, the name we still know and use.
In 1697, rebuilding and renovations of the buildings started and by 1706, it was completed. The flourishing era of Wenshu Monastery was during the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Jiaqing (1796 to 1820) and his successor Emperor Daoguang (1820 to 1850) when abbot Benyuan largely expanded it.
After the revolution of China and the establishment of the Republic of China, when the country was fighting the Second Sino-Japan War (1937 to 1945), some Buddhist masters such as Taixu, Nenghai, and Foyuan successively lived in the monastery and promulgated Buddhist doctrines. Since 1983, the State Council of China listed Wenshu Monastery as a National Key Buddhist Temple.
Cultural Significance
Wenshu Monastery isn’t just a temple; it’s a living piece of Chengdu’s heart. It’s where old Buddhist traditions feel alive, where you can practically touch history through the amazing art they’ve kept safe. The Manjushri statue? It’s like a magnet, drawing people who are searching for a bit of wisdom.
They don’t just keep things locked away, either. It’s a place where things happen – festivals, teachings, all sorts of gatherings that bring people together. And, honestly, stepping inside feels like taking a deep breath. It’s so calm, with those old trees and gardens, a real escape from the city noise. You can just feel the peace, which I think is something everyone needs.
And, you know, they’ve got a tea house. It’s not just any tea, it’s like sipping a bit of tradition while you soak in the atmosphere. It’s that mix of everyday life and something deeper that makes the place special. So, yeah, Wenshu Monastery is a big deal for Chengdu, a place where culture, faith, and a bit of quiet come together.
What is inside this monastery?
The Hall of Three Sages of the West
This hall has three statues of the Three Sages of the West; which are namely Amitabha, Mahasthamaprapta, and Guanyin.
The Four Heavenly Kings Hall
The hall has the Statues of Four Heavenly Kings situated on its opposing side. There is also a statue of Maitreya in this hall and the statue of Skanda at the back of it.
Mahavira Hall
The roof has a height of around 10.5 meters (34.5 feet) and houses a sitting statue of Sakyamuni in the center of it. There are also two statues of Kassapa and Ananda on the sides of the Sakyamuni. These statues were cast in the Emperor Daoguang era in 1829.
Dharma Hall
The Dharma Hall is located behind the Mahavira Hall. This Hall enshrines statues of Bhaisajyaguru (known as Medicine Buddha) and his Twelve Heavenly Generals on both sides of the hall.
There are some artifacts and relics inside the monastery. One of them is a finger bone of the Sakyamuni Buddha which master Nenghai had brought from Bodh Gaya in India. The other is a parietal bone relic of Chinese famous Buddhist monk, Xuanzang. They say this relic is from Nanjing Bao’en Temple in Jiangsu.

Lingyin Temple
Lingyin Temple is a part of the Chan sect in the Chinese School of Mahayana Buddhism. It is the largest among other temples in the Wulin Mountains. Also, it contains many grottos and the most famous one is the Feilai Feng (the peak that flew hither).
History
The foundation of this places dates back to 328 AD during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (265–420). An Indian monk known by his Chinese name “Huili” founded this place. It shows the fact that Buddhism in China was originated from India. Since the establishment of the temple, it has been a known monastery in the Jiangnan region.
During the Wuyue Kingdom (907–978), this place experienced a great blossoming era. The temple then owned nine multi-story buildings, 18 pavilions, and 72 halls. The temple also had 1,300 dormitory rooms, which were the home to over 3,000 monks. During this time, many of the magnificent Buddhist carvings of Feilai Feng grottos and other nearby mountains were created.
The monastery of Lingyin Temple was considered as one of the ten most important Chan sect temples in the Jiangnan region during the later periods of the Southern Song Dynasty. Although the temple had the most importance, the Marauders attacked it. The temple has been reconstructed several times since the attack deconstruction. The current structures of the temple are mostly restored during the tale Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).
After the communist party took over China, Mao Zedong ordered the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, which led to some damage to the temple from the Red Guards. Zhou Enlai, who was the Premier of the People’s Republic of China at the time, protected the temple from massive destruction.
The temple today is a prosperous destination for both tourists and pilgrims. It is considered among the wealthiest monasteries of China. Between the regular pilgrims of this place, former paramount leader Deng Xiaoping is a worthy mention.
Architecture
The Lingyin Temple is a mixture of the Song Dynasty and Qing Dynasty architecture as well as a colossal structure site. This monument has five main halls which are beautifully painted and decorated.

Hall of Four Heavenly Kings
The Hall of Four Heavenly Kings is the first hall of the Lingyin Temple. This hall is an enormous one and has two significant statues inside. One of the sculptures is the giant Laughing Buddha, and the other one is the Skanda Buddha (known as Weituo in China), which is 800 years old. Also, it is considered as the most important statue of the temple.
Mahavira Hall
Mahavira Hall is the main hall and the statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, one of the most famous statues of the original Buddha, can be found here. This statue is the largest wooden Buddhist statue in China.
Other Halls
The other halls of the Lingyin Temple are all equally beautiful and display precious collections of sculptures and artifacts. The presence of these ancient relics alongside the smell of incense and the surrounding trees would bring you a peaceful and spiritual state.
Feilai Feng Grottoes
You can visit the unique attraction of Feilai Feng Grottoes before or after visiting the Lingyin Temple. Don’t miss it! It needs just a short walk from the temple. Feilai Feng is the greatest one between the Five Zen Buddhist Mountains.
History
According to legends, it was initially transported from India; therefore, it was named Feilai Feng. “Feilai Feng” literal translation in English is “the Peak that Flew Hither” and it is also referred to as Flying Peak. The grottoes here are filled with numerous Buddhist rock carvings that line with the river banks and hillsides.
The Carvings of Feilai Feng Grottoes
There were around 470 original carvings that still 335 of them are preserved well. Most of these carvings were done in the 10th century and are more than 1,000 years old.
Walking through these atmospheric caves and their exceptionally well-preserved carvings will make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. If you want to see the best sculptures of these places such as the famous laughing Maitreya Buddha and eighteen Arhats, you will need to continue your way on the east side of the stream.
These carvings are astonishing and their appealing looks will amaze you. If you would like to reach the summit of Feilai Peak, you will need around 10 minutes.
Walking on this mountain and the verdant forest will bring you a calm and fresh breath. Also, you can imagine how the monks have lived here and meditated for nearly 1,300 years!

How to get Lingyin Temple and Feilai Feng Grottoes?
The temple is located in the west neighborhood of West Lake (about 3.5 kilometers) and it is hard to get there by foot or bike. Using a bus or taxi is recommended. Various bus lines can help you to reach the temple from different points of the West Lake. If you use a car or a taxi, you will have about 20-40 minutes from West Lake depending on your starting point.

✈️ How to Get There: Your journey to paradise typically starts by flying into Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (also known as Caticlan Airport – MPH), which is the closest airport to Boracay. Several airlines offer domestic flights from Manila and other major cities in the Philippines. Alternatively, you can fly into Kalibo International Airport (KLO), which is a bit further away (about 2 hours by land and sea), but often has more affordable flight options. From either airport, you’ll need to take a short tricycle ride to the Caticlan Jetty Port. From there, it’s a quick 10-15-minute ferry ride to Cagban Jetty Port on Boracay Island. Finally, another tricycle ride will take you to your chosen accommodation.
