The journey begins at the Marangu Gate (1,870m). You will trek through a lush, tropical rainforest where you can spot exotic wildlife, including blue monkeys and the black-and-white Colobus monkeys. This section offers a gentle introduction to the climb.

Leaving the forest behind, the trail opens up into the moorland zone. You will enjoy your first clear views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The landscape is dotted with unique high-altitude plants like giant lobelias and groundsel.

Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours
This is a vital rest day to allow your body to adjust to the high altitude. It significantly increases your summit success rate. You can take a short walk to the Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi Ridge for better views before returning to the hut for rest and hot meals.
Activity: Acclimatization Hike
Hiking Time: 2 to 3 hours
Today you cross the lunar-like landscape of the "Saddle," a high-altitude desert between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The air becomes thinner as you reach the base of the summit cone. Early sleep is essential as the summit attempt starts at midnight.

Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours
Starting around midnight, you will trek through heavy scree toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, it is a final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa (5,895m). After celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Kibo for a meal and continue down to Horombo Hut.

Hiking Time: 10 to 15 hours
On your final day, you will descend through the moorland and back into the rainforest. Once at the Marangu Gate, successful climbers will receive their official gold or green certificates. Your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi.
