Itinerary

Day 1

Inverness to Portree

  • We depart Inverness in the morning, 7

    We depart Inverness in the morning, 7:30 am, and begin our journey along the mysterious Loch Ness. Keep an eye out for the legendary monster ’Nessie’ as we stop at the ruins of Urquhart Castle with panoramic views of the loch. We head south through dramatic glens before visiting the historic Commando Memorial and view Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, from afar.

    We drive to Fort William, where you will board the Jacobite Steam Train for a scenic two-hour ride with spectacular views of the Highlands and Scotland’s scenic west coast. After experiencing what is said to be the greatest rail journey in the world, we disembark the train in Mallaig to relish fresh seafood for lunch.

    We ferry across the sea to the Isle of Skye and travel through the marvellous Cuillin Mountains before arriving at our overnight destination in Portree.

    Check-in at 7:00am for a 7:30 departure from 15 Union Street, Inverness, IV1 1PP (Across from the entrance to the Victorian Market). Look out for a blue or yellow bus.

Day 2

Portree to Inverness

  • We bid farewell to the Isle of Skye and head to the romantic Eilean Donan Castle, reputedly the most photographed castle in Scotland. We continue south-west and soak in the stunning scenery before stopping for lunch at the picturesque village of Beauly.

    With our energy replenished, we visit a Highland whisky distillery to warm our bellies with Scotland’s favourite national drink and learn how ‘uisge beatha’ is made. Listen to the tales of the last battle fought on British soil as you explore the grounds of Culloden Battlefield, followed by a visit to the standing stones of Clava Cairns; made famous by the hit TV series Outlander. Crossing back into the capital of the Highlands we arrive in Inverness in the early evening.

    We are unable to hold the bus or refund for any late arrivals. Return times are approximate and subject to road conditions and weather. Please ensure you allocate sufficient time for any onward travel plans, allowing at least 3 hours after the scheduled return time for connections or activities.

  • The minimum age for a Highland Explorer Tour passenger is 5 years old.
  • Those who are 17 year old pay the adult price, but need to be accompanied by someone aged 18 or over.
  • Cancellation needs to be made 22 days before the departure date. 
  • Collapsible wheelchairs can be accommodated providing the passenger is accompanied by someone who can assist them to board and disembark.
  • Highland hotels and guesthouses do not have lifts/elevators. Guests should be able to walk up steps in order to access rooms.
  • The summer and winter itinerary vary slightly.
