Gal Vihara
Previously named Uttararama, Gal Vihara is an excellent sightseeing site for travelers as part of the Polonnaruwa Park. It houses the gigantic statues of Buddha at different poses that astonish you at first glance. The first statue is a sitting Buddha, the second is leaning, the third Buddha is at the standing position, and the fourth one is a little Buddha figure in an artificial cave.
Bathing Pool
The Bathing Pool, also known as Kumara Pokuna, is located outside the southeast corner of the imperial house lands. It houses a lotus island in its center with two of its prevailing crocodile-mouth fountains. Soak in the incredible beauty of the lush green surrounding the pool.
Audience Hall
Take a stroll around and witness one of the well-preserved structures of the royal palace. The king’s Audience Hall soothes your eyes with its stunning elephant figures intricately carved on the walls in unique positions. Head to the magnificent stairs to the Audience Hall designed with wonderful lions at each side’s highest point.
Parakrama Samudraya (Sea of Parakrama)
King Parakramabahu built this ancient man-made rainwater tank in Sri Lanka, which is the biggest one overlooking the western areas of the Polonnaruwa. With an area of 2500 hectares, Parakrama Samudraya contains a volume of 134 million cubic meters of water serving as the irrigation source for agricultural areas. Don’t miss out on the incredible sunset view of Polonnaruwa.
Rankot Vihara
Don’t miss out on hiking throughout these stunning buildings that are still in fair condition. Rankot Vihara is the most enormous dagoba in Polonnaruwa, located among the temples and remnants.
Divine Quadrangle
A small collection of stunning and brilliant ruins on a scaffold encircled by a wall, A Quadrangle is filled with an accumulation of structures in the whole ancient city. One of a kind circular relic dwelling called the Vatadage is located in the center of the Quadrangle.
King Parakramabahu Palace
King Parakramabahu Palace is a seven-story structure that Lord Parakramabahu built in the 11th century with a thousand chambers. A stairway at the base links a one-meter thick wall palace to head at the building’s upper floors, made of wood.
Thivanka Image House
Thivanka Image House is known as one of the most giant brick buildings in Polonnaruwa, housing a Buddha sculpture named Thivanka for its fantastic component of been bowed in three spots at the knees, at the waist, and at the shoulders. Put this destination on your must-visit list in Polonnaruwa as it’s a different Buddha statue you might ever see anywhere in the world.
Ancient Library (Potgul Vihara)
A strong structure in the furthest south of Polonnaruwa, the Potgul Vihara is a small circular empty dome that served as storage for the sacred books. However, some also believed that it used to be a historical lecture theater.
