Batticaloa, town, eastern Sri Lanka. Lying on an island off the eastern coast, it is linked to the mainland by causeway, bridge, and ferry and by road and railway connections. Batticaloa is the trading centre for rice and coconuts from nearby plantations and for other agricultural products. It was captured by the Portuguese in 1622, by the Dutch in 1638, and by the British in 1796. The region has been a centre of Tamil separatist activity, and during the 1980s the town was held by Tamil rebels until it was retaken in 1991 by government troops. In December 2004 a large tsunami triggered by an undersea earthquake near Indonesia struck Batticaloa, causing widespread death and destruction. Ruined Portuguese and Dutch forts remain from the colonial period. Pop.

Diving into the stunning waters off Pasikudha was a breathtaking experience; I was lucky enough to witness playful dolphins and majestic whales during my boat ride. I stayed at a charming beachside hotel that perfectly complemented my adventurous spirit, offering a cozy retreat after long days of exploring. The cultural sites around Polonnaruwa were fascinating, giving me a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage of the region, although I wish there was more time allocated to each historical stop.

Embarking on this adventure was a refreshing escape filled with opportunities to explore vibrant marine life, including playful dolphins and majestic whales. The accommodations were comfortable and provided a perfect base for my daily excursions to the stunning beaches of Pasikudha. One suggestion I have is to include a bit more time for cultural experiences in Polonnaruwa, as the historical sights were truly captivating and added depth to the trip.

Exploring the waters off Pasikudha was a highlight for us, especially spotting the playful dolphins and majestic whales during our boat trips. Each day was a new adventure, balancing beach relaxation with fascinating cultural insights from Polonnaruwa’s rich history. One minor suggestion would be to include a bit more downtime between activities, as we found ourselves wanting to soak in the beach atmosphere a little longer.

We had such a fantastic time on our three-day adventure, especially during our unforgettable whale watching excursion where we spotted a pod of playful dolphins accompanying the majestic giants. The local cuisine was a highlight too; the seafood feast we enjoyed on the beach while soaking up the sunset was simply divine. Exploring the rich cultural heritage in the nearby ancient ruins added another layer of excitement to our trip, allowing us to connect with the history of the area. One of our favorite moments was when our kids got to interact with local artisans who shared their craft, making it a memorable experience for the whole family. The only suggestion we would have is perhaps to include a few more options for vegetarian meals, as we have some dietary preferences. Overall, the trip was a wonderful blend of nature and culture, and we’re still reminiscing about those beautiful beach days!
