Discover the beauties of Sicily during this eleven days self-drive tour. Immerse yourself in rich Greek and Roman history, culture and architecture. Drive through several UNESCO Heritage Sites and unique towns, and admire splendid views and art masterpieces. Climb the magnificent Mt Etna volcano and enjoy lunch with the stunning views.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Palermo: the second largest historical centre in Europe with its largest number of UNESCO sites. It’s a city that has experienced centuries of dizzying highs and crushing lows. One will find crumbling staircases as well as Italy's largest opera house. Architecture in the city reflects the city's periods of Arab, Norman, and Spanish rule.

Taormina: a charming town located on a rocky plateau of Mount Tauro overlooking the Ionian Sea, at a height of about 250 meters. Taormina boasts a rich artistic, historical and cultural heritage that with its healthy climate and beautiful natural scenery, has attracted visitors since the middle of the eighteenth century.

Syracuse: a city notable for its rich Greek and Roman history, culture, and architecture. The birthplace and home of the pre-eminent mathematician and engineer Archimedes. This 2,700-year-old city played a key role in ancient times when it was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world.

Agrigento: is best known as the city of temples, with its vast archaeological park that retains a string of five Greek temples and the ancient city walls that surrounded the place that was named Akragas.

    Day 1 ARRIVAL PALERMO

    Arrive at Palermo Airport and pick up the car. Reach your hotel in Palermo and check in. In the afternoon take a walk and enjoy an unforgettable tour of the historic city center of Palermo. Consider exploring the breathtaking Capella Palatina, a spectacular private chapel built by the Norman King Roger II and decorated with ornate mosaics. Featuring both Arab and Byzantine influences, this chapel is one of Palermo’s most spectacular jewels. You might also take time to visit the Cathedral, a real amalgam of architectural styles, it’s believed that even before the existing cathedral was created, the site was previously home to a Roman temple, a Byzantine Basilica and later even a mosque. To complete your journey, step into the stunning La Martorana Church, known for its remarkable mosaics.Overnight in Palermo.

    Day 2 PALERMO – TAORMINA (270km – 3.5hrs)

    After a tasty breakfast, drive to your next hotel in Taormina. Take some time to enjoy a walking tour of the little city. Consider exploring the town’s most captivating highlights, including the stunning Greek Theatre and the ancient Roman Odeon, where history comes to life. Take in the breathtaking views from Piazza IX Aprile and admire the beauty of the Duomo as you wander through the charming streets. To end your experience on a sweet note, indulge in the famous “granita with brioche” at one of the city’s oldest and most beloved bars.Overnight in Taormina.

    Day 3 TAORMINA – MT ETNA – TAORMINA (110km – 2.2hrs)

    Begin your day with a hearty breakfast before setting out on your self-guided exploration of Mount Etna. Drive to one of the starting points, such as Rifugio Sapienza or Piano Provenzana, where you can follow marked trails leading up the mountainside. As you ascend, take in the dramatic landscapes shaped by centuries of eruptions, from ancient lava flows to more recent volcanic activity. Information boards along the trails provide insight into the region’s unique geology. For a deeper experience, consider visiting one of the visitor centers, such as the Etna Park Visitor Center in Nicolosi, where you can explore interactive exhibits about the volcano’s formation and impact on the region. If you’re up for a more adventurous trek, follow paths through the pine forests on the lower slopes. After your exploration, make your way to one of the many local wineries on the slopes of Mount Etna. Many offer tastings or scheduled tours where you can sample the region’s renowned wines, paired with a selection of Sicilian specialties.     Day 4 TAORMINA – SYRACUSE (120km – 1.5hrs)

    Have a delicious breakfast at the hotel, and make your own way to the next destination: Syracuse. In the afternoon, take some time to explore Ortigia, the jewel of Sicily’s southeast. This charming island, rich in history and culture, offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Begin your exploration at the Piazza del Duomo, where you can admire the stunning Syracuse Cathedral, built over the ruins of a Greek temple. Wander through the narrow, picturesque streets, soaking in the Baroque architecture and lively atmosphere. Make your way to the Fountain of Arethusa, a freshwater spring steeped in Greek mythology, before strolling along the waterfront promenade for beautiful sea views. Stop by the Temple of Apollo, one of the oldest Greek temples in Sicily, and take time to explore the bustling local markets where you can sample Sicilian delicacies.Overnight in Syracuse.

    Day 5 SYRACUSE

    Delight in a tasty breakfast at the hotel. Today you’ll have a free day to relax. We suggest spending some hours at the beautiful beaches of “Fontane Bianche” or “Arenella”, both with spectacular white sand and crystalline water. For sunset we suggest reaching Marzamemi, the old fishing village. The village is washed by the Ionian Sea and the level is lower than the sea. Enjoy an aperitif or dinner there with unspoiled views of small boats bobbing in the water.Overnight in Syracuse.

    Day 6 SYRACUSE – NOTO (40km – 0.6hrs)

    After breakfast at the hotel, reach your next hotel in Noto. We suggest visiting Noto, a city renowned for its breathtaking Baroque architecture. Begin at the iconic Noto Cathedral, a magnificent 18th-century structure carefully reconstructed after an earthquake. Take in the grandeur of its intricate façade before heading across the street to Palazzo Ducezio, now the town hall, where you can peek inside the lavish Hall of Mirrors, adorned with gilding and stuccos. As you wander through the city’s elegant streets, admire the harmonious architecture of its palaces, churches, and balconies, each showcasing the splendor of Sicilian Baroque style. Stop by the grand Porta Reale, the ceremonial entrance to the city, and soak in the lively yet serene atmosphere. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where you’ll find charming cafés, boutique shops, and hidden courtyards.     Day 7 NOTO – RAGUSA – MODICA – NOTO (120km – 2hrs)

    After breakfast at the hotel, we suggest driving to Ragusa, one of Sicily’s most enchanting Baroque towns. Completely rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693, Ragusa boasts an array of stunning architecture. Start your journey in Ragusa Ibla, the historic heart of the city, where you can wander through atmospheric streets lined with grand noble mansions and intricate churches. Be sure to visit the breathtaking Duomo di San Giorgio, an iconic example of the Sicilian Baroque style, and take in the beauty of the nearby Piazza Duomo. As you stroll, admire the charming alleyways, hidden courtyards, and scenic terraces offering panoramic views of the city. In the afternoon, make your way to Modica, famous for its unique chocolate-making tradition. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the great city of Akragas, founded in 581 BC, and today, its ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Greek civilization. Begin your walk at the main entrance near the Temple of Juno, an impressive Doric temple perched on a hill with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Follow the marked paths to explore the ancient grid of streets and marvel at the massive remains of five Doric temples that give the valley its name. Make your way to the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world, standing majestically with its intact colonnade.     Day 9 AGRIGENTO

    After breakfast, enjoy another day in Agrigento. Consider visiting the stunning Scala dei Turchi, a breathtaking white limestone cliff that dramatically rises from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Relax on the nearby sandy beach, or climb the smooth, natural steps for panoramic coastal views. Alternatively, take a stroll through Marsala, a charming town famous for its historic center and world-renowned wine. Explore its elegant streets, visit the lively Piazza della Repubblica, and stop by a local enoteca to sample the town’s famous Marsala wine.     Day 10 AGRIGENTO – PALERMO (130km – 2hrs)

    After breakfast, enjoy your last day in Agrigento and take your time before reaching Palermo for the last night.Overnight in Palermo.

    Have your last Sicilian breakfast before reaching the airport and returning the car.

    What to Bring

    Comfortable and light clothing is the most suitable for travelling in Italy. Visitors should not wear sleeveless shirts, shorts, short skirts or skimpy clothing when visiting temples, religious or official buildings. Sun protection, sun glasses, a hat, and mosquito repellent can be very useful during your stay.
