The Great Mosque of Kairouan, the first mosque in the Maghreb, was built in 670 and beautifully rebuilt in 836. As a cultural landmark, it set a standard for mosque architecture across the Muslim West, influencing designs as far as Andalusia. Named after Oqba, the Arab conqueror and city founder, this mosque reflects the rich heritage of the region.
The striking minaret, reminiscent of ancient lighthouses, rises to 31.5 meters and overlooks an expansive courtyard framed by elegant arcades. Inside, a forest of columns enhances the prayer hall, creating an atmosphere of reverence. Many columns were repurposed from ancient sites like Sbeïtla.
