Itinerary

Archeological site of Dougga

Join us for a guided visit of the archaeological site of Dougga, lasting two hours and led by a knowledgeable official guide. They will share intriguing facts about the extensive ruins of this well-preserved Roman town, which is situated on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding valleys dotted with olive plantations. The journey to Dougga takes you through a beautiful rural landscape.

Unlike the Roman ruins found in Carthage or other European towns, where a few isolated monuments are surrounded by modern cities, Dougga offers a completely preserved town, including its Roman streets. Without the barriers and large crowds of tourists, you can take your time exploring the houses, tunnels, temples, and theaters.

Dougga's history extends beyond the Roman period. You'll find an ancient Punic temple here, complete with a cleansing bath and walls dating back to the Phoenician period, which were later transformed and reused by the Romans, as evidenced by the Roman pillars. Additionally, the site features a notable funerary monument, the Mausoleum of Ateban, which dates back to the 2nd century BC and is one of three examples of royal Numidian architecture. Its inscription can be found in the British Museum, and the Punic-Libyan bilingual inscription played a crucial role in translating the Libyan script.

This visit is definitely worth it!
