🏁 Tour Itinerary: Angra Do Heroismo City Tour
Day 1: Angra City Tour
The City Tour aims to show the history of the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Thus, the tour is carried out on foot through the city streets, and some monuments visit its interior to better understand their importance in our history. Therefore, we usually start the tour of the Fortress of São João Batista, the fortress built by the Spanish during their 60-year stay on the island. Following the city, we pass by the Convent of São Gonçalo, where there is the possibility of a brief visit to its interior.
After visiting the convent, we proceed to Alto das Covas, where we can see the city below us. Heading to Rua da Sé, the main street, we can appreciate the architecture around us, glimpsing the wide main street, one of the indications of encouraging the premature development of the city.
Arriving in the middle of Rua da Sé, we visit the Igreja da Sé, the island’s cathedral, as well as the Azores, where the Bishopric of the Azores is located. Visiting the interior, we have a different perspective of the intrinsic work on the altars and ceilings of the matrix.
Moving on to the Capitães Generals Palace, we can take part in a guided tour of the building, during which they convey a large part of the city’s history, as well as the influence of the various kings who passed through here.
Following the Municipal Garden of Angra, we stroll through its interior, observing flora from all corners of the world. After relaxing for a while, we proceeded to the City Hall, where, in the Salão Nobre, we can see several artifacts, such as the Royal Letter, the Key to the City, among others.
Passing Rua Direita, we can briefly visit a store/market about 200 years old, where customers can experience how they bought products 2 centuries ago. At the end of Rua Direita, we visited the Igreja da Misericórdia, where the first hospital in Angra do Heroísmo was once located. Today, the church not only has architecture rich in materials and beauty but is also used as an exhibition area for works by local artists.
We finish our tour in the bay of Angra, with a glimpse of the bay, the reason for all the history that the city has seen pass for almost 600 years. Some visits to monuments may have a cost. Sites such as the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, the Military History Center, Pico da Memória, among others, are optional, and can be included at the customer’s request or at the option of the guide in service.

We hired this comany to show us round this beautiful island. The people were very professional from the moment they picked us up at the airport on arrival until our departure. There is so much to see but in our limited time Vadiva showed us so much.
