The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres (660Β ft) high According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle theΒ [ ], this site was selected by KingΒ [ ]Β (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes.

    Galmaduwa Temple, A short turn off from the Kundasale Road just outside of kandy and you will come upon a strange sight: the unfinishedΒ Galmaduwa Viharaya. Traditionally ascribed to King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, it is said that while this building was being completed the king heard of the discovery of a cave at Degaldoruwa and stopped the work on Galmaduwa shifting his attention to Degaldoruwa. It has been once a filming place for the David Lean's 1957 Oscar-winning epic "Bridge on the River Kwai" on the banks of Kelani River. Most visitors for adventure sports are from Colombo. The Kitulgala's main attraction is White water rafting where you can ride the tides of Kelani River.     Commercial hub with offices and shopping areas located amidst oldest colonial hotel GOH. It has a fantastic view of the Colombo harbor, lighthouse with clock tower (older than Big Ben in London) close to the president’s house and old parliament. Afterwards, proceed through the main street passing the old Dutch Museum, belfry and old City Hall which houses puppets of earlier governors of Sri Lanka.Β  Stop will be made at the Old Dutch hospital with shops and restaurants facing Sri Lanka’s twin tower buildings.
