Three-Day Isle of Skye and West Highland Line Tour from Edinburgh

Your Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh sets off in the morning, heading north and passing the UNESCO World Heritage Site Forth Bridge over the River Forth. As the landscape begins to shift, your guide will introduce you to Scotland’s turbulent past, sprinkled with a first taste of Scottish music.

The first stop of the day is Dunkeld, often called “the gateway to the Highlands.” Wander through its peaceful streets and quaint corners and you’ll quickly see why the nickname fits.

Next, we venture deeper into Highland territory to the Commando Memorial. On a clear day, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak.

From there, we head to the legendary Loch Ness. Stretch your legs at Fort Augustus village, and if hunger strikes, settle in at a local spot for lunch.

Our journey continues to the Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, where you’ll learn about Trees For Life and their work to restore the Caledonian Forest during a walk among ancient native woodland. Before reaching the Isle of Skye, we pause to admire Eilean Donan Castle, perched atop a small island on a sea loch – arguably one of Scotland’s most photographed castles.

Finally, we cross the Skye Bridge and arrive in Portree, the island’s colourful capital. Here, we’ll base ourselves at The Skye Inn for the next two nights.

The day begins with a visit to Kilt Rock, where basalt columns and dramatic waterfalls create a truly striking scene. From there, we head to the Old Man of Storr. Weather and time permitting, we’ll take a walk to this iconic pinnacle, admired for its jagged spires and incredible views across the island.

Next, we make our way to Dunvegan Castle, the historic seat of the MacLeod clan. While entry is optional, those fascinated by history and the roots of their ancestors will feel immersed into centuries of Highland history as they wander through the castle’s rooms and gardens. After exploring, we return to Portree, leaving you some free time to enjoy the village’s pubs, restaurants, and colourful harbour.

On the final day, an exciting trip highlight awaits! We rise early, catching the first light over the Highlands as we leave Portree behind and make our way to Armadale. Here, we take the ferry to Mallaig and board the diesel train* along the famous West Highland Line, following the route made iconic by the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. As the train winds through lush mountains and along Scotland’s rugged west coast, you’ll see why this is considered one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world.

After arriving in Fort William, your local guide will pick you up at the station to continue the journey by coach. We travel through Glen Coe, pausing to take in photos of its dramatic peaks and valleys. A comfort stop in Tyndrum gives a chance to stretch your legs or grab a light snack. On the final leg back to Edinburgh, we pass Stirling and the Wallace Monument, a striking reminder of Scotland’s rich history. We arrive in Edinburgh in the early evening, completing a memorable tour of the Isle of Skye and the Highlands.
