Swim and Learn: Up-Close Sea Turtle Encounters in Zanzibar’s Natural Lagoon

Located on the beautiful shores of Nungwi in northern Zanzibar, Baraka Natural Aquarium is a unique turtle rehabilitation sanctuary set within a Natural Cave Lagoon. This small tidal grotto functions as a protected haven where injured and rescued sea turtles are cared for before being released back into the open ocean. The setting is natural and peaceful, offering visitors an authentic marine encounter rather than a traditional aquarium experience. Your visit begins with a short introduction from the local team, who explain the conservation efforts behind the sanctuary. Many of the turtles arrive after being accidentally caught in fishing nets, while others are purchased from fishermen to ensure their protection. The goal is always rehabilitation and safe release back into the sea once the turtles have fully recovered.

After the briefing, you’ll enter the natural lagoon, where you can swim alongside these gentle creatures in clear tidal waters. Guests are welcome to feed the turtles with fresh seaweed provided on site and observe them up close as they glide gracefully around the pond. For a more immersive experience, Snorkeling Masks can be used to explore underwater and watch the turtles in their semi-natural habitat. The lagoon reaches depths of up to two meters, so Life Jackets are available for non-swimmers or anyone who prefers extra support. While the water may occasionally appear slightly murky due to natural tides, shower facilities are available after your swim. This memorable experience combines education, conservation awareness, and the rare opportunity to interact respectfully with sea turtles in a truly unique setting.
