Philae Temple (Temple of Isis)
The ancient Egyptians constructed a temple dedicated to the important goddess Isis in the holy island of Philae in the Nile River. Isis was dubbed the Mother of God, the kings’ protector and healer, and life-giver. Due to the construction of the Aswan Dam and the High Aswan Dam, the island submerged. To protect the temple endangered by the river damming, a dam was built surrounding the island.

Nubian Museum
Nubian Museum is the best place for history lovers and those interested in ancient Nubia’s culture to hear the story of a destroyed civilization by the rise of the Aswan Dam. You’ll find many black and white photos of the fantastic project of saving the Abu Simbel and Philae temples from the rising waters of the dam. The ethnographic section showcases a stunning collection of Nubian folk art and handicrafts. Remember to visit the Fatimid cemetery right behind the museum, which is a mud-brick mausoleum.

Elephantine Island

St. Simeon Monastery
St. Simeon Monastery was initially built in honor of saint Abba Hedra. In the 10th century, the fortress-like 7th-century Monastery was renovated in dedication to St. Simeon. From then on, monks traveled to Nubia dreaming of converting the Nubians to Christianity; at last, Salah ad-Din demolished the structure in 1173. Encircled by desert sands, the religious site was constructed on two levels, where the upper level is made of mud brick, and the lower is made of stone.

Aga Khan Mausoleum
