Yala National Park is a national park in Sri Lanka. The reserve covers 979 km², although only the original 141 km² are open to the public. It was established in 1894 as a Game Sanctuary. Much of the reserve is parkland, but it also contains jungle, beaches, freshwater lakes and rivers and scrubland. The latter zone is punctuated with enormous rocky outcrops. The range of habitats give rise to a good range of wildlife. Our day exploring the vast wonders of the national reserve was a memorable experience, especially when we spotted a family of elephants grazing peacefully near a waterhole. The guide’s knowledge truly enhanced our understanding of the area’s wildlife, but the vehicle’s comfort could have been better for the long journey. Despite a couple of minor hiccups, the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant fauna made for an incredible adventure we won’t soon forget.

After a long week of business meetings, we sought a break from the hustle and bustle in Bentota, and the safari in Yala National Park turned out to be a delightful escape. From the moment we embarked on our journey, we were captivated by the stunning landscapes and the anticipation of encountering Sri Lanka’s wildlife wonders. The highlight for us was witnessing a majestic leopard lounging in a tree, a sight that made the early start worth every minute.
Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also passionate about the park’s ecosystem, which made our experience all the more enriching. There were moments, however, when the vehicle felt a bit cramped, which slightly hindered our enjoyment during the bumpy rides. Nevertheless, we delighted in spotting elephants and a variety of birds throughout the park, each sighting adding to the thrill of our adventure.
The day culminated with a sense of rejuvenation, reminding us that there’s much more to explore beyond our business commitments in Sri Lanka. Overall, the experience left us with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders of this beautiful island.
