Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Kingdom of the Lion. The reserve is only 21 km (13 mi) from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km (4.3 mi) from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants and the 15 or so leopards are rarely seen. The most common larger mammal is the endemic Purple-faced Langur.

Our family had an amazing time exploring the rich biodiversity of Sri Lanka’s rainforest, particularly the Sinharaja area. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out unique plant species and even helping us spot some elusive wildlife like rare birds and monkeys. One highlight was hiking along the trails, where the lush greenery and the sounds of nature truly immersed us in the experience. However, we did find the midday heat a bit overwhelming at times, and it could get humid, especially for our kids. Despite this, the adventure was well worth it, and we left with unforgettable memories of Tangalle’s incredible natural beauty.

We had a fantastic time exploring the vibrant biodiversity of the rainforest, with our guide leading us to some truly breathtaking views, including a stunning waterfall that felt like a hidden gem. The immersive experience made us appreciate the unique flora and fauna of the region, although the humidity was a bit much at times, making the trek feel longer than expected. Overall, this adventure was a memorable day filled with nature and discovery, perfect for any couple looking to connect with Sri Lanka’s rich environment.

Immersing myself in the lush greenery of Sinharaja was a highlight of my time in Tangalle. I was captivated by the rich biodiversity—spotting vivid butterflies and unique bird species made me feel like I was in a living gallery. However, the trek was a bit strenuous for my solo exploration, and I sometimes wished for a little more guidance on the trails.
