Tour Plan
Muthurajawela, the largest saline coastal peat bog in Sri Lanka, forms an integrated coastal wetland ecosystem with the Negombo Lagoon. This marsh-lagoon complex dates back to around 5000 BC. In July 1996, the northern section of the marsh, spanning 1,777 hectares, was declared a sanctuary under the Fauna & Flora Protection Ordinance.
The marsh is a significant attraction for both locals and tourists, offering sightseeing and boating tours. It also supports local agriculture and forestry. To protect the ecosystem, visitors are guided through the sanctuary by the staff of the Muthurajawela Marsh Centre.

We absolutely loved our time watching the diverse birdlife at Muthurajawela, where we had a magical encounter with a vibrant purple heron perched gracefully on a mangrove branch. The serenity of the wetlands made it easy to lose ourselves in nature, and exploring the intricate ecosystems felt like stepping into Sri Lanka’s hidden avian paradise. One minor suggestion would be to have a bit more time for leisurely photography, as we found ourselves wanting to capture every stunning moment!

We had a wonderful time exploring the lush wetlands, captivated by the variety of birds that flitted through the trees and soared overhead. The gentle boat ride provided a serene backdrop, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in nature’s beauty while spotting colorful species we had never seen before. One memorable moment was when a majestic heron gracefully landed just a few feet away, giving us an incredible opportunity to appreciate its details up close. Transportation was smooth and comfortable, making the journey feel effortless and enjoyable. If there’s one area for improvement, it might be to include a bit more time for photography, as we found ourselves wishing we could linger longer at certain viewpoints. Overall, this experience offered a unique glimpse into a hidden paradise filled with vibrant life and tranquility.

As we ventured through lush landscapes, the sheer diversity of birdlife left us in awe, with vivid hues and melodious calls creating a symphony of nature around us. Spotting a majestic kingfisher perched elegantly on a branch was a highlight, making the experience feel like a true escape into an avian paradise. While the guide was knowledgeable, we would have appreciated a bit more time at each stop to soak in the beauty and snap some extra photos.
