About This Tour

Mistra Valley and Selmun are situated on the northeast cost of Malta, about 2km from the village of Mellieħa. The area features a secluded shingle bay between the high plateaux of Xemxija and Selmun, overlooking the sea.

This nature walking tour offers a peaceful walk surrounded by various native Mediterranean plants and aromatic shrubs growing on the Mediterranean garigue and maquis, regularly accompanied by panoramic views from hills and seaside cliffs.

Various wild native plants including endemic plants (found only in Malta), wild irises, wild orchids, French daffodils, sand crocuses, rock roses and aromatic plants are some examples of the flora that grows in this area. Our qualified local botanist will provide you with details about all the flora we will be seeing in this area.

Our walk will take us along Mistra Valley, lined up with many fields proudly displaying seasonal agricultural produce.

We will also have the opportunity to stop for a refreshing 30/40-minute (optional) swim stop at Mistra Bay (subject to weather conditions).

Other highlights along our route include the Selmun Palace; an 18th century tower, the ruins of Fort Campbell which was built by the British between 1937 and 1938, the core of the old rural village of Selmun with its many traditional old farmhouses, the village chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Redemption, some Paleo-Christian tombs from the Roman era, views of saint Paul’s Islands and Comino Island and a natural crater-like rock depression in doline rock, amongst others.

The coastal views from the 100m high cliffs are spectacular! A tour which will give you the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature, learn about the flora of the Maltese islands, visit great sights, experience breath-taking views, all while enjoying a healthy and pleasant 7km walk!

Exploring the Mistra Valley and Selmun provided a refreshing escape from our busy work schedules. The tranquil beauty of Malta’s flora was captivating, especially when we reached the stunning views overlooking the coast. While the guide was knowledgeable and engaging, a bit more time spent on local history could have added depth to the experience. Overall, it was a welcome break filled with scenic landscapes and delightful discoveries. We left feeling inspired by the natural beauty surrounding us.

We loved wandering through the vibrant flora of the Mistra Valley, where the scenery was truly a feast for the eyes. Our family appreciated the comfortable transport that made the journey to Il-Mellieħa in Malta smooth, though a bit more time at Selmun would have been perfect.
