The boat ride is a wonderful way to take a closer look at this complex wetland ecosystem, a world heritage site protected by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, being one of the last wetlands in Sri Lanka to contain a pristine mangrove forest. Journey past massive mangrove forests, glide under the canopy of the forest tunnels as they curve playfully towards the watercourse. Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery
Globally, all seven species of marine turtles are endangered. Of these seven, five come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka. The process of marine turtles nesting, hatchlings being born, and swimming back to sea is fascinating to observe. The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery which primarily operates as a hatchery, is a great place to observe collected and rescued eggs hatch and then safely released into the sea.

From the moment we stepped onto the boat, the tranquility of the river enveloped us, revealing a rich tapestry of greenery and wildlife. The leisurely pace allowed us to soak in the serene surroundings, with birds darting above and the gentle sounds of nature creating a perfect backdrop. Our visit to the hatchery was particularly memorable; witnessing the tiny turtles take their first steps towards the ocean felt like a meaningful connection to the local ecosystem. The staff were passionate about their conservation efforts, sharing stories that truly highlighted the importance of protecting these remarkable creatures. One minor suggestion would be to enhance the boat’s seating comfort, as it could be a bit more supportive for longer journeys. Overall, this experience left us with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for the environment we explored together. If you’re seeking a blend of adventure and conservation, this outing is definitely worth considering.

We loved gliding through the serene waterways, spotting vibrant wildlife along the way. The experience of releasing the baby turtles at the hatchery was truly moving, although a bit more information about their journey would have added to the moment.

We had the best time drifting along the serene waters of the Madu River, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. The highlight was definitely releasing tiny turtles at the Kosgoda hatchery; it felt rewarding to contribute to their journey. If we could suggest one improvement, it would be to have a bit more time at the hatchery to learn about the fascinating conservation efforts.
