    • Kandy, more popularly known as the hill capital of Sri Lanka, is an attractive tourist destination. Its history dates back to the 15th century, when it was the last royal capital of the country. The city is 115km from Colombo and is the second biggest city in Sri Lanka. Kandy has an abundance of culture around it the Temple of the Tooth being the most popular attraction. The centre of the city is situated in a valley which is elevated at 600m above sea level. Kandy Lake is an artificial creation by one of the past rulers and today, it is a scenic centre piece of the town. Also, home to an international cricket stadium, Kandy brings in thousands of cricket fans. Sports, religion, history and culture, Kandy has it all! A Day tour of Kandy should not be missed out on your tour of Sri Lanka.

the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession. This was the last capital of the Sinhala kings whose patronage enabled the Dinahala culture to flourish for more than 2,500 years until the occupation of Sri Lanka by the British in 1815. It is also the site of the Temple of the Tooth Relic (the sacred tooth of the Buddha), which is a famous pilgrimage site, one of the most famous Buddhist temples in the world, which was built to protect the sacred tooth relic thought to belong to Lord Buddha, which has been enshrined in Sri Lanka for hundreds of years As well as a host of other temples, visitors to the city can wander along Kandy Lake, stroll through the stunning Botanical Gardens created by the British in the 19th century and still one of the most beautiful gardens in Asia.

The day spent visiting the Temple of the Tooth was genuinely memorable, offering a fascinating glimpse into Kandy’s rich cultural tapestry. I particularly loved strolling through the gardens, where the lush surroundings were a perfect backdrop to reflect on the morning’s experiences. The cultural show at the end was vibrant, though I wished it had been a bit longer to savor the performances even more. One small drawback was the crowd at the temple, which made it a bit hard to really absorb the atmosphere. All in all, it was a fulfilling way to spend the afternoon in this beautiful city.

We had an enriching experience exploring the vibrant culture and history of this enchanting city. The highlight for us was visiting the sacred temple; witnessing the rituals surrounding the precious relic was truly moving. Our children were captivated by the cultural show that followed, with its lively dances and vibrant costumes, adding a delightful touch of local flavor. Transportation was smooth, and our guide was knowledgeable, sharing fascinating stories that kept all of us engaged. However, the time spent at the gardens felt a bit rushed, leaving us wanting to linger longer amidst the lush surroundings. Overall, it was a memorable family outing that we’ll cherish!

Our afternoon spent wandering through the bustling city was a delightful mix of culture and spectacular sights. The temple, with its intricate architecture and vibrant atmosphere, truly captivated us, especially the moment we stumbled upon the ceremonial display surrounding the revered relic. After that, we took a leisurely stroll through the lush gardens, which provided a peaceful escape from the lively streets. The cultural show wrapped up our day perfectly, showcasing some incredible dance performances that left us in awe. However, the timing felt a bit rushed at times, especially in the gardens where we wanted to linger longer. Also, while our guide was informative, we sometimes wished for a little more depth in certain areas of history. Overall, it was a fantastic half-day adventure that we’d happily recommend to anyone looking to immerse themselves in local culture.

Exploring the gardens was a peaceful escape, with vibrant blooms and the sounds of nature wrapping around me. I found the cultural show particularly engaging; the dancers brought such energy and storytelling to life that I was completely captivated. The only slight downside was that the temple could get quite crowded, but it was worth the visit to see the sacred relic and soak in the atmosphere.
