The Kalutara Vihara is a Buddhist temple built in the 1960s which holds the distinction of being the only shrine in the world that is hollow. It is three stories high.

Kalutara temple is one of the country’s most holy places of worship and attracts the Southwest Buddhist community as well as tourists. Inside the Dagoba is a magnificent array of paintings describing the stories of Buddha.

Lunuganga Estate was the country home of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. In 1947 the garden led Bawa to decide to become an architect. As he went on to become Sri Lanka’s and one of Asia’s most prolific and influential architects, the garden at the Lunuganga estate remained his first muse and experimental laboratory for new ideas.

Bawa continued to change and experiment with the garden’s spaces and structures throughout his life until his final illness in 1998. The gardens are now open to the public and the buildings on the estate are run as a country house hotel.

Kalutara, a district in Sri Lanka’s Western Province is emerging as one of the top tourist coastal destinations on the island. This is because of its many amazing beach destinations around it, best of which are as follows.

Visiting the Kalutara Temple was a serene experience that allowed me to soak in the spiritual ambiance of Sri Lanka. The highlight for me was wandering through Lunuganga’s lush gardens, which felt like stepping into an artist’s dream. My only wish is that the tour could have included more time to fully appreciate the beauty of the estate.

Exploring the stunning estate was a highlight for our group, especially with the lush gardens that seemed to stretch endlessly. The journey to the magnificent temple was filled with delightful sights, and we loved learning about the local culture from our knowledgeable guide. Each stop offered unique photo opportunities, and we found ourselves captivated by the intricate details in the architecture. One suggestion for improvement would be to include a bit more time at the estate to soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. Overall, it was a memorable day filled with laughter and friendship.

The moment I stepped into the tranquil estate, I was captivated by the interplay of nature and art that seemed to breathe life into every corner. Wandering through the lush gardens, I found a serene spot where I could sit for a while, listening to the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant sound of a temple bell chiming softly in the background. While the day was mostly well-paced, I would have appreciated a bit more time to soak in the rich atmosphere at the estate before heading back.
