A city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It is known for Galle Fort, the fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone seawalls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church. Galle Lighthouse stands on the fort’s southeast tip. Built by the Dutch, beginning in 1663, Galle's core is the Fort, a walled enclave surrounded on three sides by the ocean. A key part of the Fort’s appeal is that it isn’t just a pretty place. Sure, tourism now dominates the local economy, but this unique city remains a working community: there are administrative offices and courts, export companies, schools and colleges. You can visit a Turtle hatchery near Galle to see various species of Sea Turtles, if you wish you could even release a baby Turtle to the Ocean.

Our day in Galle was an intriguing mix of history and nature, particularly at the well-preserved Dutch fort where we marveled at the architecture. The turtle hatchery visit felt rewarding, as we learned about conservation efforts and got to see tiny hatchlings making their way to the sea. Although the glass-bottom ride was a pleasant experience, the water clarity could have been better for optimal viewing; nonetheless, we appreciated the chance to see the marine life up close.

Wandering through the cobblestone streets of the Dutch fort was a highlight, where the blend of history and vibrant local life felt alive. The turtle hatchery visit was both enlightening and heartwarming, watching tiny creatures make their way to the sea. I did find the glass bottom ride a bit crowded, which slightly dulled the experience of observing the underwater world, but overall, the day spent exploring Galle left me with lasting memories.

Exploring the historic fort felt like stepping back in time, with its impressive walls and stunning views of the coast. One unforgettable moment was watching the baby turtles being released at the hatchery; we were all captivated by the joy of seeing them take their first steps toward the sea. While the glass bottom ride offered a unique perspective of the underwater world, we wished there was more time to enjoy the vibrant marine life before heading back to the bustling city streets.
