About This Tour

The Catacombs of St. Callixtus

St. Callixtus’s Catacombs are part of the so-called Callistian complex, an area of about 30 hectares between the Via Appia Antica, the Via Ardeatina and the Via delle Sette Chiese, in Rome, which houses various funerary areas and catacombs

The catacombs arose towards the end of the 2nd century, with some private Christian hypogea and a funerary area directly dependent on the Roman church. They take their name from the deacon Callisto I, appointed by Pope Zephyrinus to administer the cemetery itself. Having in turn ascended the papal throne, Pope Callistus I enlarged the funerary complex, which soon became the official one of the Church.

Riding through the Appian Way on our eBikes was a captivating experience, allowing us to appreciate the grandeur of ancient aqueducts and the serenity of the catacombs. One of the highlights was pausing for a delightful Roman lunch, which perfectly complemented the day’s exploration. While the pace was enjoyable, we felt that a bit more time at the catacombs would have enriched our understanding of their history.

Exploring the ancient roads on eBikes was a fantastic way for our group to uncover fascinating sights, like the stunning aqueducts that felt frozen in time. Cycling through the countryside, we enjoyed the thrill of navigating the historic paths while learning about the local catacombs. The lunch experience was delicious and offered a nice pause amidst the adventure, although we wished the meal could have included a bit more variety. Overall, we came away with wonderful memories and a deeper appreciation for the history that surrounded us, even if a few sections of the route were a bit bumpy.
