Itinerary
Archaeological Site of Ancient Aptera
At the archaeological site of Aptera, you will be able to admire findings of all periods of inhabitation of this City-State. The walls of the ancient city, which is 3.480 meters long, dating back to its acne period, of the 4th century BC.
The theatre belongs to the Roman phase. Ruins of a villa with peristyle yard, of the early years of Roman rule built on the standards of the Hellenistic period. Unexpectedly high Roman cisterns and parts of public and private baths.
Buildings of the Byzantine Period. The view from there is absolutely breathtaking!
Vryses Village
Then we will descend to Vrisses, a green village with many springs. Noteworthy is the bridge, which is considered the oldest in Crete. Here we will also visit an olive oil factory.
Georgioupolis Beach
The next station is Georgioupolis. A coastal village surrounded with eucalyptus trees and sandy beaches. Also, it is located in the small port of the village, hosting the small fishing boats of the locals. It is worth seeing the river Almyros in a very scenic environment, where you can enjoy your coffee.
Lake Kournas
Kournas Lake, where you will admire the unique flora and fauna and the marvelous landscape. Also, small boats can take you for a tour. A few taverns with delicious dishes including fish from the lake are available.
Argiroupolis Springs
Argyroupoli, previously Ancient Leppa Is a well-preserved village with natural springs and many Venetian mansions that are still residential. Inside and around the village are excavated parts of the ancient city of Lappa, Roman remains.
It is worth walking in the narrow alleys of the village, to see the traces of the mosaic floors, the Byzantine frescoed churches, and the Venetian mansions.
You can also visit the nearby necropolis of ancient Lappa with the carved Greco-Roman tombs, the monumental plane tree, and the temple of Pente Parthenes.
However, the place that accepts the most visitors is the famous Springs of Argyroupoli, which are formed in a green setting a few meters below the village. The water comes out of the cave of Agia Dynami and after passing the old watermills that once ground the grain, they end up in the riverbed of the river Mouselas. The watermills today have been turned into taverns that offer traditional food.
