The historic core of Split, its stunning Diocletian’s Palace, was originally built as the Roman Emperor’s retirement venue at the turn of the 4th century AD. But, when the Slavs ransacked the Roman Salona in the 7th century, the entire town fled to the palace, setting foundation for the wondrous city Split is today.
