Montenegro Travel Guide
- Everything you need to know for your trip to Montenegro-
Montenegro is a relatively small country in the Balkans, Southeast Europe, with a rich history of the medieval era and historic sites of other periods. If you love ancient towns and peaceful villages, Montenegro can be a fantastic destination for you. The country also houses stunning natural environments and national parks, holding unique wildlife of its own. Having a bit of diverse climate in its different regions, the country offers an excellent regional cuisine, created by friendly and kind locals. As soon as you explore the historic parts of Montenegro and its beautiful environment, you should also head out to its coasts of the Adriatic Sea and relax.
Why Visiting Montenegro?
First of all, one will enjoy learning about Montenegro’s fantastic history and seeing all the preserved structures through time. The Bay of Kotor is an excellent example of this aspect of the country, but it is not all. There are numerous ancient and historic elements to see inside and outside the cities. Their architecture is like nowhere, preserving traces of several major civilizations.
Right after all of its human-made sites, you have the environment to fall in love with. The nature in Montenegro makes it ideal for an adventure. It is an excellent chance to go trekking or hiking in the world’s second deepest canyon. You can head out to its National Parks and embark on an adventure to explore the environment.
The rich nature and lovely environment will also pave the road to the diversity of foods or regional cuisine. Taste their amazing highland cuisine and plan a food tour that will lead you toward the coastal areas. Having several neighboring countries and having been part of other countries or empires, they have traces of other cuisines that are not like the originals. It is as anything they have taken and learned from history; they have perfected into something better by local ingredients.
Speaking of descending towards the coast, make sure to try the beach and the Adriatic Sea. You might think that sharing a sea with several other countries is nothing special, but the old fishing villages and towns are among the top destinations. Any traveler might have seen the likes of these historic textures in other countries, but rarely this marvelous.
Having extraordinary waters, seas, and lakes make Montenegro a fantastic place to go on cruises and boats. Get close to mother earth and enjoy the peace on the seas. They may be a little crowded these days, but that does not make them any less enjoyable.
Having such a beautiful land, people are also full of joy and hospitality. You can easily have fun next to the locals and party the night until dawn. Who wouldn’t love to party on the sands of such fantastic beaches? Explore the country and hit the modern areas and get into a club and have a blast. While there, try some of their drinks and make sure to bring some of them home for your friends.
Besides partying, you can always travel with your family to Montenegro. It is as great for families as it is for friends or even on your own. There are rather easy hiking destinations and amazing caves to explore, which families love. Take your loved ones to any part of the country, and you and your friends or family will find something enjoyable no matter their age or status.

Best Time to Visit Montenegro
You can see all the four seasons in Montenegro, but each month can have its own weather. The diversity of climate each month and each city is because of the many mountains and the nearby coast. However, it can be said that the Summer (May – September) and after that Autumn (October – November) in Montenegro is the best season for traveling.
Spring (March – April)
Temperature: 3°C (37.4° F) – 16°C (60.8° F)
Features
Wet and chilly, but it will get warmer. Snow is melting, but rain will not allow you to visit the mountains and hiking destinations with ease. The beach may be open but rainy. From the beginning to the end of Spring, the weather will shift significantly, but it is still far from ideal.
Where to Visit in Spring?
Summer (May – September)
Temperature: 11°C (51.8° F) – 28°C (82.4° F)
Features
From the beginning of May, the amount of rain and rainy days begin to decrease. You will have pleasant and warm weather in June and July, with the least amount of rain. All around the country is green and full of life, making it suitable to visit any part of Montenegro at these months of the year. But it can get really crowded since the lovely weather brings more and more travelers.
Where to Visit in Summer?
Everywhere. During May and September, you will have fewer options as it is beginning to get warm in May, and the start of getting cold in Autumn. In July and June, you can go wherever you please and try white-water rafting, hiking, and relaxing on the beach.
Autumn (October – November)
Temperature: 5°C (41° F) – 18°C (64.4° F)
Features
During the day, it is still warm and pleasing. Besides, rain is still not that much to be bothering, but it will increase over time. None of the activities will become impossible yet, but expect to see less hiking and rafting by the end of November as it gets too cold for such things. The beach is still going to be crowded, but expect it to end as you move toward winter.
Where to Visit in Autumn?
Black Sea Coast
Temperature: -1°C (30.2° F) – 8°C (46.4° F)
Features
Rain increases and then gives its place to snow. Evidently, most tourist sites are closed, like the beach, which will be empty for travelers. The cold can get to you but now is the time if you want to travel cheaply. It is an excellent place to celebrate Christmas with a charming and medieval vibe, but enjoying tourist sites is impossible. You can still enjoy what is inside the cities, but you need to pack for a cold winter.

Stay in Sveti Stefan and Enjoy the Sea
Walk out of the 14th century Kotor and enter the 15th century Sveti Stefan. Back then, in the 15th century, it used to be a small fishing village, and now it is a top attraction where you can enjoy the sea and beautiful buildings. Sveti Stefan is not large, and it is connected to land via a small and narrow passage. The islet is amazingly well-preserved because this small village seemed insignificant in all the invasions and attacks in the region.
Ever since the mid-20th century, it gained fame because of its attractiveness, bringing many people to visit its historic structures. It is not far from Budva and Kotor, and it is located to their south, so if you are in the area, do not miss this place. Just keep in mind that the islet is off-limits to those that do not reside in the Aman hotel.
Have Fun and Visit Historic Sites at Budva Old Town
Sveti Stefan is mentioned to be in the south of Budva, but Budva is not just a place to be known as a nearby place to a top destination. Budva Old Town itself is a place to fall in love with, since it has an old and traditional texture of its own. It is another medieval piece of Montenegro. Budva Old Town is near the coast, and it is a well-preserved and walled city of its time. But what makes this town different is that it is more glamorous and more touristic.
It is a good place to walk along the coast, but the best of this town is inside the walls. Explore around and visit one of the restaurants and cafés as you see some historic sites and learn a bit of history. If you want to party, the Old Town of Budva is a suitable place to party as well.
Go Adventuring in Tara River Canyon
The best part of Durmitor National Park is Tara River Canyon and the surrounding forest. It is considered a natural wonder of Montenegro, and it is the second deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon. It is perfect for adventuring and ideal for whitewater rafting. You can pick trekking, hiking, or getting wet in the river and have a great time in this country’s stunning environment.
Are you not the adventures type? You do not like the idea of rafting and getting wet? The river is about 84 kilometers long, which means you will not get the full experience from up top, but it is still a jewel of Montenegro to see.
Go on a Pilgrimage to Ostrog Monastery
The Ostrog Monastery used to be a place to seek refuge from Ottoman invaders is now a top attraction. This Orthodox Monastery is carved into the stone and above the ground. Join in on the prayer of this still functioning place of worship, or just marvel at the beautiful structure of the 17th century.
And do not worry if you are not Christian. This house of God is open to all travelers!
Spend a Few Days in Cetinje and Explore
What remains of the Capital of an independent country is a city called Cetinje. The city is not very large and is only a few centuries old, but it has a rich culture and heritage. The old government buildings still stand and serve as museums and tourist sites. It is recommendable to spend a few days in Cetinje as it has a good number of highlights to see. You really cannot say which of this city’s activities is best, which is why it would be better to stay in Cetinje for several days and try them all.
Make a Short Stop at Perast
You might want to expand your timetable while in Montenegro to visit another small and lovely town called Perast. The town has buildings and villas made with stone, which do not take too much time to explore, but you might want to stay for some time as soon as you get there. The top highlights of this town are the two lovely churches, Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George, but they are not all.
As for location, Perast is near the Bay of Kotor, just towards the northwest. It is a bit smaller than Kotor and a little less touristic, but you will not regret going.
See the Wildlife at Lake Skadar
After visiting numerous towns and villages with amazing exotic and historic architecture, it is time to visit Lake Skadar. Lake Skadar is part of a National Park with a beautiful environment and a rich species of birds. It is the largest lake in the Balkans, and the best part of it is in Montenegro. The landscape is an ideal place to visit the wildlife, spend time in nature, and take pretty pictures of more than 280 species of birds.
One of the things that most people do is to take a boat ride on Lake Skadar. On the shores or on a boat, do not miss the view of the valley and the beauties of the trees and rock formations all around.
Discover the Tunnels of Lipa Cave
Blue Grotto is a secluded place in the Lustica Peninsula. The cave and the blue reflection of the light added to the calm and quiet, make it popular with tourists who are willing to discover. If the Blue Grotto itself was not that calming, Lustica Peninsula has serene beaches and villages near the cave. On a more general note, the place has fewer crowds, making it a good and large area for a relaxing experience.

What to see in Montenegro
Local Transportation in Montenegro
Foot!
Since most of the places to visit are small, one will not face the necessity to use public transports, unless they do not like the idea of walking around. The hotels, resorts, and the best sites are nearby, but still, there are other means of transportation.
Bus
The bust system is not that well developed, except for the capital, which is larger and more populated. The fares are fixed, and most of them are only 80c per trip.
Taxi
The primary types of transportation inside cities are buses; otherwise, there are almost always taxies. For example, you will not see cabs that commonly in Podgorica because of its good bus system. In any case, they usually have a meter, but if they do not, check the price before getting in.
Intercity Transportation in Montenegro
Bus
The bus systems inside the cities may be limited, but taking a bus is the best way of traveling between the cities. You can almost find a bust station or hub in all the towns as well as major cities. The bus lines increase during peak season (Summer), but they are available all year.
Bike
You can travel the country by cycling, but you need to have full gear, a suitable helmet, and a good bike. The rules are very strict because some areas have difficult terrain, but they will not stop you from going around on a bike.
Train
The trains in Montenegro offer the most beautiful and scenic routes, but they are limited. Since the country has many mountains, you will not have so much availability for trains, but if you can take them, be sure to give them a try as well. This problem is going away as the train system is being upgraded, but it will take time to complete.
Ferry
The most limited means of transportation in Montenegro and the least useful of all is traveling by boat. But it is still available with the few coastal destinations it offers. The prices will vary depending on the kind of cruise or ferry you choose and your destination.
Renting a Car
The roads are mostly suitable for renting your own car, and the prices are fare depending on the car you rent. It can be the most expensive option if the selected car is expensive or rather large. However, the only problem to mention can be the age restriction for driving and renting a car in Montenegro. Some companies may rent to 18-year-old individuals, but most places will not allow you to get a car below 22 or 25.

Montenegro Travel Costs
Food
The price for groceries and fast food is low, allowing you to find something to fill you up with less than $6 a meal. You can also find cheaper things to eat that will cost about half that amount, but then you will have to stop caring if it is greasy, or healthy or not. If you are prepared to spend on that, you will eat tasty food, but going on a budget is also not very difficult.
If you plan to spend as little as possible, avoid summer, which is peak season, and stick to street food or guest house food. But also keep in mind that food in Montenegro is not very expensive. If you are looking to spend as little as possible, look for pizza slices and burgers.
Accommodation
As a budget traveler, you can save a lot by selecting a dorm or shared room. Such places’ prices start at about $15, whereas the prices for more suitable hotels or double rooms start from more than $50. As for luxurious accommodations, the lowest price is no lower than $120. Selecting the right place to stay can significantly vary your spending, which can be helped by booking your accommodation ahead of time.
Transportation
You may not need a lot of transportation within the cities or towns as they are rather small, but there is no avoiding traveling between cities. If you do not consider the cost of your flight from home, getting around in Montenegro is not very expensive. It should be better for most trips to stick to buses as they charge so little (a maximum of $14). Renting bikes or cars are not that very costly either but keep the price of fuel and bike repairs in mind.
However, taking boats and ferries is not fair rides, as they can only take you to coastal areas. They also cost much more, especially because they will not take you very far.
Daily Costs
Level | Features |
---|---|
Low-end (US $30-50/day) | Stay at dorms and shared rooms—no drinks with meals along with looking for groceries and making food on your own. Try the least of local transports and go around only using a bus. |
Mid-range (US $70-170/day) | Reside in hotels or take double rooms with better facilities. Enjoy some of the local cuisine and some of their drinks. It is still better to use public transports but renting a car is also possible. |
Top-end (US $220+/day) | Rent a good car, eat well, and try all their amazing cuisine and traditional drinks. You can stay in the best hotels and perhaps even get a cruise on the sea. |
Best Hotels in Montenegro
You can easily find 5-star hotels as Montenegro is a very tourist-friendly destination. There are also top and luxurious hotels and resorts with historic architectures, some of which are renovated ancient structures. As for less expensive places, some places suit the budget travelers as well, even if they go during peak season. The critical point is booking your accommodations, even dorms and shared rooms.
Montenegro Travel Tips
Some of the driving you see is insane. Some of the locals are not very interested in following the rules of the road. So, if you see a speeding truck, just steer clear of them.
There are some places you are not allowed to smoke, but you can just smoke and go where you please in most places. It also serves as a warning for those that hate smoking. If you go into a bar or café and do not like smoking, you might just have to look at the ceiling to see if there is smoke or not.
If you do not know their tongue and accent, you’d better know German because English will not help you. You should know their language or have a guide and access an online translation; otherwise, you will get stuck in many places.
Montenegrins use a lot of meat in their traditional cuisine and leave little room for Vegetarians and Vegans. If you want to avoid meat, you may have to cook for yourself. On the bright side, groceries are rather cheap in Montenegro.
The bus system is the best method of transportation in this country. But, if you want to travel a long distance, taking a train can save you some money. And it is much more beautiful, with the best scenic route you can get.
First of all, pick the right season for your trip. Second, always pack as if it is about to rain! Third, you will be walking a lot, especially in the old town and on stone streets; therefore, you will need good shoes.
You would do better even to book bus tickets ahead of time, not just in peak season. There are times that you will see a and empty bus or hotel, but still, better safe than sorry!
Most of Montenegro is found and enjoyed if you are the explorer type. If you just stick to the country’s highlights, you will have a great experience, but keep in mind that there is a lot more to see.
First of all, you need to pay a tourist’s tax according to where you are staying. It is not going to be that much, but it still something to remember. Other than that, there is a fee you have to pay at each bus station. It sounds a little annoying, but it is the law. Again, this fee is not much, but be prepared for such things, and ask what they are for if you are not sure about them.

Currency & Money Tips
The official currency of Montenegro since 2002 is Euro despite not being a member of the European Union. Other currencies will not be accepted in this country and must be exchanged at the banks or exchange offices. Keep in mind that these places will charge a 1% commission fee. Exchanging in other places or by private individuals is illegal and will be punished.
The working hours of banks are 08:00 to 19:00 during weekdays and 09:00 to 13:00 on weekends. As for denominations, you can find Euro banknotes of €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200, €500. Since Montenegro is not permitted to mint its own coins and only chooses Euro as the official currency, they do not have coins. However, the Euro coins you may see are the same as anywhere else; 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, €1, €2
ATMs
You can easily find an ATM in most towns and villages and all major cities. They mostly accept Visa and MasterCard but do not rely on them to provide you with cash at all ATMs. As you make a withdrawal, keep in mind that these machines tend to give big notes that are hard to break. But do not let that dissuade you, as you will need to exchange and have cash.
Also, keep in mind that some cards will require a withdrawal fee. If this problem is with your card, you need to check that before you depart and spend more than you have to. It mostly happens when you have to exchange and withdraw, but even then, it is better to ask before using the ATM.
Other than that, if your card has no problems and needs no extra fees for withdraws, the ATM should not charge you extra. In any case, if you see additional charges for your withdraws and using your cards, you would better select ‘decline’ and ask before using your card.
Credit Cards
Visa and MasterCard are the most widely accepted cards, but some other cards like American Express may also be usable in Montenegro. What you need to know before using any of your cards is that they will not help you in hotels, restaurants, cafés, or shops. There may be exceptions, but always have cash with you when you go to such places.
Food & Drink (Montenegrin Food)
Food in Montenegro is mostly regional. It means that popular food in a region can be unpopular in another. Montenegrin cuisine mainly uses meat, cooked with regional vegetables and ingredients in creative ways. So, try to eat local food as you travel, and eat as many of them as possible. Do not worry about liking the tastes; they are all unique and exotic in their own ways.
Njegusi Prosciutto
Njegusi
Prosciutto (pršut) is a kind of ham belonging to the village of Njeguši, that
takes about a full year to prepare! This specialty of Montenegro is really
exotic as one of its main ingredients is the climate. First, pig meat is salted
for several weeks, and then it is hung for several more weeks to dry. Finally,
it is smoked for a few months over a fire that must be continuously tended to.
The final result of Njegusi Prosciutto is served with local cheese or
vegetables as a meal to die for.
This kind of
ham is only made in this region because the locals claim the area’s wind and
humidity helps the process significantly. And it is not exactly that simple to
make. Try it with fresh vegetables and some of their wine.
Njeguski Steak
Having tried Njegusi Prosciutto, you now have to try the Njeguski Steak. This dish was an invention of a chef who used local and traditional ingredients of Montenegro to create something you can not pass. The cooking does not follow a fixed recipe. Serve it along with cheese, and you have a mouthwatering dish.
Ispod Saca
Ispod Saca is a slow-roasted lamb, goat, or veal with tender vegetables. This delicious food will melt in your mouth because of its way of cooking. This dish’s slow cooking is done in an iron pan and over hot coals to get the best taste and texture. Ispod Saca of Montenegro is regional, found mostly in the mountainous regions, and prominently uses tomatoes, potatoes, onions, regional herbs, and spices. When in the heights of this country, make sure to taste Ispod Saca. You will love it!
Lamb in Milk (Brav u Mlijeku)
If you want to taste something traditional and unique, try the Brav u Mlijku or Lamb in Milk. Like many other dishes, Lamb in Milk is regional and mostly seen in the northern highlands. The milk in which the lamb is cooked adds to the taste, makes the meal softer, and takes its smell away. It still has a strong smell, but you should give it a try because of its taste. The vegetables such as carrots, onions, potatoes, and various seasonings are added as the lamb is slowly being cooked in milk.
Since it is rooted in tradition, Brav u Mlijeku is mostly served in celebrations. Try it with some local bread to make it more enjoyable and memorable.
Kacamak
Kacamak is a staple food of Montenegro, best served with a local cheese called Kajmak. It is made by cooking cornmeal and potatoes topped with Kajmak and sour milk. It can be considered porridge and mashed potatoes, a favorite of the people living in mountainous areas.
Photo by Haydn Blackey via Flickr
Black Risotto (Crni Rižot)
Away from the mountains, now it is time to try something belonging to the coasts. Crni Rižot or Black Risotto is famous for its black color, coming from squid or cuttlefish ink. It has an exotic and unique taste because of all the subtle ingredients used in the dish. The appearance may not be charming, but as you try it, you will love it. Just brush your teeth after having this dish, as the black color tends to stick.
Buzara
Buzara is fantastic seafood cooked in a delicious sauce and originated in coastal areas. Prawns, shrimp, clams, or squid are cooked in either white wine or red wine and tomatoes. The primary type of meat for Buzara is usually Prawns, a local favorite, but other versions are also tasty. Make sure to drink the sauce, too, as the ingredients used to create a very great and rich flavor.
The locals mostly cook this meal in a huge pot to serve entire families. Plan to have this traditional food in traditional ways, with a group of friends or family.
Cevapi
Cevapi has numerous versions, but all the people in the Balkans love it. The food is generally minced meat, vegetables (mostly just onions and pepper), and spice. The meat is shaped like sausages in most places but can also be found in ball shapes. Cevapi will be served on a plate next to cold cucumber and tomato salad with local bread.
Everyone simply loves it. It is rather simple, served with a variety of tasty sauces, and made in different ways. One can also make Cevapi with other types of meat, but pork makes it a bit difficult. Also, no matter how many times you have this food, it always tastes different, and as the locals say, it is because of the meat each chef uses in their Cevapi.
Burek
Left by the Ottoman Invaders, Burek is now a popular snack and breakfast in the Balkans. Burek is a crunchy pastry filled with minced meat and cheese, which can go great with some mushrooms or spinach as more fillings. As you are having Burek for breakfast, buy some local yogurt, and experience what the locals have in the morning.
Palačinke
Palačinke is simply just pancakes that have fillings. The fillings do not have to be something special or something too much, making them most suitable for dessert. You can fill them with chocolate, bananas, nuts, jam, or a mix of these. It can give you a lot of energy, and it is a relatively easy local dish.
Mobile & Internet
Mobile & Internet
There are three well known prepaid SIM Card providers in Montenegro. Telenor Montenegro, Telekom (T-Mobile), and m:tel with specific and various internet packages and prices. They are mostly similar, having adequate coverage and excellent internet all over the country. You just have to see which one will serve you better.
If you do not require the internet in all the places you go and do not care how fast or costly it gets, you can always use the Wi-Fi in your hotel or restaurants. Slow connection and lag are always possible, so if you really need internet, it is best to buy a prepaid SIM Card.
The best company
Most travelers to Montenegro choose Telenor, which is a wise choice. It covers almost all the inhabited, offering the best coverage of all providers. They offer packages, none of which are more than 15 euros ($18.35 US dollars). Reasonable prices, excellent coverage, and good internet will make it a great recommendation as a prepaid SIM Card for travelers. a
If you prefer to have a slightly cheaper and faster network, you can also consider Telekom. Their coverage is almost the same, as they are the second-largest provider in the country.
Where to buy it?
Since you will need many directions and translations in this country, it is best to buy your SIM Card first thing at the airport Arrival Terminal. The Airport is the best option as you will have more chances of finding someone behind the counter that speaks English.
The same Newsagents seen at the airport can also be seen on the roads and in the malls. Just make sure to get the right size SIM Card and that your phone is unlocked. Ask for the attendant to set your SIM Card up if it requires anything. Keep in mind that you will need to have your identification (passport) ready.
After getting a prepaid SIM Card or an international one, keep in mind that Roaming is expensive!
Costs
- Telenor prepaid SIM card (10 € – ~$12.24) with only 10 GB Data for 15 Days
- If you want more, you have to recharge your balance.
