Itinerary

Binnenhof

Continue to delve into Hauge’s rich history at the Prison Gate, the only surviving of the three main entrances to the castle. Ironically, the fairytale-looking gate hides a sinister past as a barbaric medieval prison where famous Dutch historical figures Cornelis de Witt and Dirk Volckertszoon Coornhert were incarcerated.

Binnenhof

After that, marvel at the majestic and slender Noordeinde Palace, the official workplace of Dutch monarchs and one of the only four royal palaces across the Netherlands. Don’t forget to check out the photogenic equestrian statue of King Film Orange, the first liberator of the Netherlands from Spanish colonization and also the first owner of the palace.

Stop 5

Proceed to visit another landmark closely tied with the royal family: Grote of St. Jacobskerk, the oldest site in Hauge together with the Binnenhof. Resting in the shade of its looming tower that reads time for the whole city, the historic church has baptized royal members and officiated the weddings of Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana, and Princess Margriet.

Stop 6

Just some steps away, marvel at the striking Renaissance gem of the 15th-century Old City Hall; so much so that it is considered among the most important Renaissance buildings in Southern Holland. Take your time to examine exquisite sculptures portraying Faith, Hope, Love, Strength, and Justice on the stunning façade, its most outstanding features.

Stop 7

Make a perfect end to the tour at The Passage, the oldest and only remaining glass-domed shopping center in Holland. A stunning 19th-century mall is an ideal place to either take a break at lovely restaurants and cafés, shop for unique craft souvenirs like designer gifts and special pens, or browse through the maze of elegant window displays under the sunny glass roof.
