Horse racing and chariot racing were popular pastimes in the ancient world and hippodromes were common features of Greek cities in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. The hippodrome was filled with statues of gods, emperors, animals and heroes, including some famous works that can be seen today, such as the Serpent Column, the Obelisk of Thutmose III and the Walled Obelisk.
