Agios Nikolaos

Elounda, Elounda

After Agios Nikolaos, we will arrive to the “deep blue” Elounda, a popular seaside destination where you will have the chance to relax and enjoy the sun and the sea!

Opposite Elounda you will see Spinalonga island, it has been a huge part of Crete’s History over the last few centuries but is most famously known for its use as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957.

The Spinelonga Fortress is the second most visited archaeological site in Crete, after the palace of Knossos, and the sixth in the whole of Greece. It is notorious for being one of the last active leper colonies in Europe, and it is said that the last inhabitant of the island left in 1962. He was a priest.

On Spinalonga you will be able to take incredible photos and grasp the complexity of the island’s history while taking in the beautiful sites of the Aegean Sea and stepping into the lives of those who lived there.

Spinalonga Fortress

Tips:

Don't forget, if you go take the boat across to Spinalonga from Plaka then do take your swimming stuff as there is a little pebble beach in Plaka where you can have é swim after walking around the island, which can be very hot!! So do take hats and water too.
