Why we love it?

This three-hour culinary workshop in the Kilimanjaro Region offers an immersive Materuni Village experience where you visit a local Chagga home at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll harvest fresh, organic vegetables and spices before learning to cook the traditional Chagga banana stew, Machalari, over a wood fire. The experience includes a handmade coffee ceremony that showcases Chagga culture and coffee, from roasting the beans to savoring the final cup. This tour suits travelers interested in authentic farm-to-table dining and cultural immersion, with a focus on supporting local families and preserving traditional Tanzanian recipes.

Itinerary

Welcome and Cultural Briefing

Meet your local guide for a warm introduction to the vibrant history and traditions of the Chagga people. This session provides essential cultural context before you begin your hands-on experience in the village.

Seasonal Sourcing: Organic Farm or Local Market Experience

Take a guided tour to source the ingredients for your meal. Depending on the harvest season, you will either visit a lush Chagga home garden (Shamba) to harvest organic green bananas and vegetables directly from the farm, or explore a vibrant local market. During the dry season, we visit local traders to hand-pick the freshest produce brought in from neighboring fertile regions, ensuring a true farm-to-table experience regardless of the time of year.

Step into a local kitchen to master the art of authentic Chagga cuisine. Under the guidance of an expert local host, you will learn to prepare traditional dishes such as Machalari using a wood-fire stove and ancestral cooking techniques.
