Rocklands Bird Sanctuary (Montego Bay)
Welcome to the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary in the hills of Anchovy for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This bird sanctuary started in 1952 by Lisa Salmon, also know as the "Bird Lady" who open it's doors to visitors in 1958. There are several different species that visit the location daily to interact with bird lover who wish to spend quality time with nature at it's best. Watch the birds fly around eagerly, waiting for you to put out a finger for them to perch while they gobble up the nectar from a handheld bottle or a finch perched and happily eating from your palm.
See many species of birds such as the Jamaican Oriole, The Doctor Bird (national bird of Jamaica), White Winged Dove, Finches, Red Crowned Woodpecker and much more! Please note that these birds are not caged, they are wild birds that visits the sanctuary daily to feed and interact with visitors. After about 1 hour with the birds, the bird keeper will take you on a short walk in the woods, pointing out various local trees and plants. You might just see a Barn Owl sleeping somewhere between the sticks! This is truly a nature lover's dream tour.
Saint James Parish Church
Built in 1775, the St. James Parish Church has been described by the famous English artist, James Hakewill, as “the handsomest church in the island” because of its size and
exquisite Georgian architecture. Inside the church itself, there are numerous memorial tablets and monuments including a marble baptismal font installed in 1848, a large solid organ made of burnished mahogany, constructed in Liverpool, England in 1780; and a brass lectern which is made in the shape of an eagle with outstretched wings. The church’s interior also features several beautiful murals done by English sculptors from the 18th and 19th centuries, the most famous of which is John Bacon.
However, the most impressive characteristic of the St. James Parish Church is perhaps its great East Window–a three-light Palladian window framed in carved burnished mahogany. Designed and constructed in 1911 by Jones and Wills of London, the centre light in the window represents the crucifixion, while the sidelights represent the resurrection and ascension of Christ. Over the years the Church has been a place of worship not only for residents of the Parish but also for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the II and the Most Rev. Dr. Michael Ramsay, former Archbishop of Canterbury.
Feel free to make a contribution to the church at your discretion.
Sam Sharpe Square
This tour takes you to downtown Montego Bay. Your first 10minutes stop will be at Sam Sharp Square. This area got its name from a freed slave who carried the same name and who led one of the bloodiest uprising in Jamaica on Christmas day in the year 1831. In this area, there is a statue of Sam Sharp and other slaves who were severely punished in the year 1832 for the Christmas day uprising that took place. Feel free to exit the vehicle and browse around. There is also the "Cage" which was originally constructed from wood in the year 1806. However, it was later reconstructed from bricks. The cage was used as a holding area for runaway Slaves who were held there until they were sent back to their plantations. It was also used as a holding area for vagrants and rowdy seamen who would get drunk and was behaving disorderly.
