Itinerary

Aberdare National Park

A day trip to Aberdares National Park in Kenya offers an incredible opportunity to explore diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, and stunning views. Here’s a suggested itinerary to make the most out of your day trip:

1. Departure (Early Morning) Leave Nairobi early: Since the park is about a 3-4 hour drive from Nairobi, start your journey early to maximize your time at the park. Depart by 6:00 AM to ensure you arrive in time for a full day of activities.2. Arrival at Aberdares National Park (Late Morning) The park has several entry points, but the most popular is through the main gate near the town of Nyeri.

The Aberdares is known for its cool climate, dense forests, waterfalls, and rich biodiversity. The park’s altitude ranges from 1,800 meters to 4,000 meters above sea level, providing dramatic scenery.3. Morning Wildlife Viewing (Mid-Morning) Β Aberdares is home to various animals including elephants, buffaloes, bongo antelopes, and numerous bird species. You may also spot lions, leopards, and various primates. Plan to visit the Salt Lick Viewing Platform or Waterhole where you can watch animals in their natural habitat.4. Picnic Lunch (Early Afternoon) Β Lunch will be at the Treetops Lodge.5. Visit the Waterfalls (Afternoon) Karuru Falls: A must-see attraction, this waterfall is one of the highest in the park, with water cascading down from a height of about 270 meters. The view from the top is spectacular, and you can take short walks to view the falls from different perspectives.6. Exploring the Forest (Late Afternoon) Forest Walks: If time permits, embark on a short guided walk in the forested areas of the park. The forest is rich in flora, with giant bamboo, indigenous trees, and a variety of wildflowers. This is a chance to experience the tranquil atmosphere of the Aberdares.7. Return to Nairobi (Late Afternoon/Early Evening) Begin your journey back to Nairobi in the late afternoon, around 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM, to avoid driving in the dark. The drive back offers beautiful views, especially as you descend from the Aberdares mountain range.
