Taourirt Kasbah rises on a low hill at the edge of Ouarzazate, right where the Draa and Dades valleys meet — a position that made it a natural checkpoint for caravans moving salt, gold, and goods between the Sahara and Marrakech for generations. Oral tradition credits the Imzwarn family with the first structure here in the 17th century, but the kasbah's real power came later: through the 19th and early 20th centuries the Glaoui family expanded it into their operational base, and it was from these earthen walls that Thami El Glaoui, the "Lord of the Atlas" and Pasha of Marrakech under the French protectorate, ran trade and politics across southern Morocco.

What's left today is a labyrinth of roughly 300 rooms — reception halls, a harem, kitchens, and servants' quarters — connected by narrow passages and keyhole doorways built to disorient outsiders. Only a fraction has been restored; step past the polished courtyards near the entrance and the building quickly turns to bare, crumbling pisé, still eroding after decades of sun and wind. The September 2023 earthquake also cracked sections of the upper Pasha's quarters, so a few rooms may be closed off on any given day. When it's open, the rooftop terrace gives one of the best free views in Ouarzazate, looking out over the Draa Valley and the surrounding kasbahs.
