The Temple of Demeter
The Temple of Demeter, located near the village of Sangri, is made of the finest quality of Naxos marble dating back to the 6th century BC. As Demeter was the ancient goddess of grain, people used to build temples close to it to fertile areas. The archaeologist Nikolaos Kontoleon discovered the remains of the Demeter temple in 1949. Today, the Temple of Demeter is one of the most beautiful ancient temples, set in a picturesque environment.
Mount Zas
The tallest mountain of Naxos and the Cyclades, Mount Zas, is located 18 km from Naxos Town. It offers a glorious history and geography of Naxos. According to mythology, god Zeus, the Olympian Gods chief, grew up in this mountain. The hill was named Zas after him. His son, god Dionysus, also grew up on this mountain’s slopes in a cave called Cave of Zas. Being at the top, mountaineers will find a stunning landscape of the Aegean Sea and the Cyclades’ neighboring islands.
Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Naxos delivers a compelling example of Naxos’s architecture during the Frankish rule between the 13th and 16th centuries AD. It’s a five-story structure built on the Frankish fortification walls, incorporating two of its towers.
The Temple of Apollo and the Portara
It’s a famous symbol and the precious gem of Naxos standing visibly on a small island at the port entrance of Naxos. Located near the port on the islet of Palatia, the temple of Apollo served as a quarry in Byzantine times. Its marble blocks, columns, and capitals have been identified in several churches in Naxos Town and the medieval mansions and fortifications in the Venetian Castro on the Acropolis.
Agios Prokopios Beach
Located 6 kilometers away from the capital, Agios Prokopios is one of the most famous beaches of Naxos and stunning beaches in Greece and Europe. This long golden sandy beach expands over 1.5 kilometers with crystalline azure waters, protected from the strong winds frequently blowing on the island. It hosted numerous umbrellas, sunbeds, and water sports facilities.
